After breaking a woeful five-game losing streak, the Chicago Cubs trot out a Bryzzo-less lineup for the third game of this four-game set in Los Angeles.
Kris Bryant hit the disabled list on Tuesday with a left shoulder injury. As for Anthony Rizzo’s absence, he gets a night off against a tough lefty against whom he is just 3-for-15 lifetime.
Without that dynamic duo, here’s the starting nine running to the bat rack looking for a season series win against the Dodgers:
- Albert Almora Jr., CF
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Javy Baez, 2B
- Willson Contreras, C
- Ben Zobrist, LF
- Addison Russell, SS
- David Bote, 3B
- Ian Happ, 1B
- Kyle Hendricks, P
Wood has some noteworthy splits going on this season. Lefties haven’t homered off Wood all season and collectively own a weak .250/.256/.308 slash line to go along with a .244 wOBA in 80 plate appearances this season. Yikes. And while the .246 average and .297 on-base percentage by right-handed hitters isn’t much better, at least righties are slugging .416 (with nine homers!) and have a wOBA that’s above .300.
The old adage of “f it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” might apply to Javy Baez batting third again. Last night, Baez hit a pair of homers in the third spot as part of a four-hit night. Baez has past success (4-for-8, 2 HR) against Wood, so hopefully that bodes well for tonight.
It’s a brand new defensive infield for the Cubs tonight, save for Addison Russell who remains at shortstop. David Bote’s presence at third base shifts Baez to second, while Ian Happ takes over for Rizzo at first. With Happ at first, Albert Almora slides into center field and heads to the top of the lineup. That’s right. Because the only thing crazier than a lineup without Bryant and Rizzo might be one that features Happ and Almora. Ben Zobrist remains in the lineup, but shifts out to left field. Jason Heyward, who is 4-for-16 with a double and a homer against lefties since returning from the disabled list, remains in right field behind Kyle Hendricks.
We’ll have more in the Pre-Gamin’ closer to first pitch (9:10 pm CT).
