Chicago Cubs Lineup: Caratini Called Up and Starts Today, Gimenez DFA’d

Cubs Lineups

This is going to be a combined Cubs Roster Move/Cubs Lineup post, so get ready for a crossover. But first thing’s first, here’s the Cubs batting order for the finale against the Tigers.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

  1. Albert Almora Jr., CF
  2. Ben Zobrist, RF
  3. Javy Baez, 2B
  4. Addison Russell, SS
  5. Willson Contreras, C
  6. Ian Happ, LF
  7. David Bote, 3B
  8. Victor Caratini, 1B
  9. Jose Quintana, P

So, as you can see (and has been rumored since last night), Victor Caratini has been called up by the Cubs and is starting today at first base. That means that Anthony Rizzo is getting a day off before the off-day, a classic Joe Maddon move, and Willson Contreras is still starting behind the plate.

To make room for Caratini, the Cubs have designated backup catcher Chris Gimenez for assignment, which means they’ll now have seven days to to waive, trade or release him. But because of the Cubs lack of upper-minors catching depth and Gimenez’s general ineffectiveness in his short time up this year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get waived by the Cubs and clear those waivers. However, at that point, Gimenez would still have to decide whether he wants to accept that assignment to Iowa or hit free agency. Again, because he hasn’t been particularly good this season, I wouldn’t be surprised if he stuck around with the Cubs with hopes of coming back up later in the year.

Elsewhere, with the lefty Francisco Liriano on the mound, lefties Jason Heyward, Kyle Schwarber, and Anthony Rizzo all get the day off. Ben Zobrist covers right field, Ian Happ is in left, and Caratini is at first (three switch hitters in one lineup). David Bote continues to cover for Kris Bryant at third and Javy Baez and Addison Russell defend up the middle.

As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time.
