Cubs Minor League Daily: Good Pitching And Great Style

Cubs Minor Leagues and Prospects

The Cubs had one game rained out and two more suspended due to weather yesterday. Factor in the two off-days, and that means we have just two games to talk about. Fortunately, Tennessee won one of them.

Even better, both games featured some very good pitching performances. Matt Swarmer and Jeffrey Passantino were both excellent in their starting roles, and with the exception of the very, very late innings for South Bend, the bullpens were about as good. Given the importance of pitching in the rebuilding Cubs’ farm system, that is good to see.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs

Iowa had the day off.

Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Tennessee 6, Biloxi 1
Smokies pitching did not allow a run after the first inning.

  • Matt Swarmer: 6 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 7 K
  • Scott Effross: 2 IP, 1 H, 4 K
  • Daury Torrez: 1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Zack Short: 2 for 3, BB
  • Vimael Machin: 2 for 4, HR
  • P.J. Higgins: 1 for 3, BB
  • Yasiel Balaguert: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Connor Myers: 1 for 4, HR

High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Pelicans were rained out.

Low A: South Bend Cubs
Great Lakes 11, South Bend 5 in eleven innings
The Cubs led by five going into the ninth, and then things completely fell apart.

  • Jeffrey Passantino: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 9 K
  • Garrett Kelly: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Brian Glowicki: 2 IP, 3 K
  • Rafael Narea: 2 for 5, SB
  • Christian Donahue: 1 for 4, 2B, BB
  • Chris Singleton: 1 for 4, 2B

Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds

Eugene is on their All-Star break.

Rookie: AZL Cubs 1

This game was suspended due to rain.

Rookie: AZL Cubs 2

This game was suspended due to rain.

Other Notes

  • Jeffrey Passantino started his season in the South Bend bullpen in June, moved to Eugene as a starter, and now is back in South Bend. Along the way he has pitched very well. He leaves Eugene with 38.1 innings under his belt and a 3.29 ERA and 9.16 K/9. Not bad for a guy drafted in the 40th round just last year.
  • If you have ever wanted to own a minor league jersey with Harry Potter stylings, now is your chance. Bidding closes today, though, so bid fast.
