Cubs Minor League Daily: We Don’t Get to Celebrate a Darvish Outing

Cubs Minor Leagues and Prospects

Today was supposed to be the day we celebrated a great Yu Darvish rehab start and argued which postseason games he would be starting. But it didn’t work out that way. Instead, today’s the day we try to comfort ourselves with the fact that the first place Cubs just played in four straight pitching duels despite missing their projected ace (and closer).

If that isn’t enough to cheer up the sad pandas of the bunch, then maybe a few minor league wins would help. Anyone currently hanging out on a ledge should probably just skip over Iowa, though.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Oklahoma City 5, Iowa 0
Oklahoma City 5, Iowa 2

Hey, at least the Cubs weren’t shut out in both games. That’s something, right? Right? Anyway, the line to note here is Kyle Ryan in the second game.

Double A: Tennessee Smokies
Tennessee 3, Jackson 1

Matt Swarmer struck out nine in his six innings of work, and Zack Short hit his 16th homer.

High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Myrtle Beach 5, Buies Creek 4

Justin Steele looked good again as Jhonny Pereda hit his eighth homer.

Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 3, Great Lakes 0

Anyone who stuck around after Darvish left the game got to see an excellently pitched game from Enrique De Los Rios and Manuel Rodriguez. Jose Gutierrez and Christian Donahue produced five hits from the top two spots in the order.

Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
Eugene 5, Boise 4 in ten innings

Riley Thompson struck out five in three and two thirds and D.J. Artis reached base three times as the leadoff guy.

Rookie: AZL Cubs 1

Cubs One had the day off.

Rookie: AZL Cubs 2
Brewers 3, Cubs Two 2 in ten innings

The Cubs gave up a pair of unearned runs, and that was the difference in this game.

Other Notes

  • Kyle Ryan has his ERA down to 2.51 working as both a starter and a reliever. I am still hoping the Cubs take a look at him in September.
  • Another save for Allen Webster in Tennessee. Two strikeouts, one inning, nothing allowed. Finding a way to get him on the September roster would be tricky, but I wouldn’t mind seeing it.
  • By way of a reminder that I am on vacation all this week (and as a result the Daily will be shorter), I’ll just mention that I’m typing this while watching the shifting patterns of light and fog as the sun rises over the mountains. I’m having a great day, in other words.
