There were late-inning rallies taking place at almost every level of the farm system yesterday, and in one case that rally even resulted in a win for the Cubs’ affiliate! … but only in one case.
The other commonality yesterday was errors. Every team but Iowa committed at least one error, some more than one. Honestly, between the losses and the errors yesterday just wasn’t a great day for the farm system as a whole.
On a day when the wind was blowing out to left, Jen-Ho Tseng pitched five shutout innings before giving three runs in the sixth. He stayed in for seven. A Jacob Hannemann double was the only extra base hit for the Cubs.
The Smokies scored four times in the ninth, helped by a Wynton Bernard homer, but thanks to the three unearned runs, it wasn’t quite enough.
The Pelicans gave up three runs in the first, five in the fifth, and eight in the ninth while managing just three hits themselves. Outfielder Roberto Caro had one of those hits and also pitched the final out of the game.
Fort Wayne rallied for two in the seventh in the first game to eek out a win, and South Bend staged their two run, final inning rally in the second game but came up just short. Jimmy Herron homered in the first game, and Jake Steffens finished the second with 3.1 innings of one hit ball.
Eugene scored in the first, but then didn’t get anything else until a Nelson Velazquez homer in the eighth.
The Cubs did all their scoring in the eighth and ninth innings. Alonso Garcia and Dalton Geekie combined to finish the game with 3.1 innings of one hit ball. Alexander Guerra doubled for the Cubs’ only extra base hit.
Rookie: AZL Cubs 2
Cubs Two had the day off.
- Tseng has pitched quite a bit better lately than he did to open the season. His first half ERA was 7.14, but in the second half he’s running a 4.84. Still not great, but improved.
- Despite frequent losses, Eugene is still tied with Salem-Keizer for the second half playoff slot in their division. Those two teams are going in reverse fast enough, though, that Boise (three games out) might be able to get back into that race in the final week of the season.
