Sounds Like the Mets and Mariners Might Be Getting Together on a Huge Cano, Diaz Trade (UPDATES: Could Go Down Tonight)

MLB News and Rumors

Well, if you were hoping for Mariners closer Edwin Diaz to make his way to the Cubs somehow this offseason, it is probably not going to happen. The Mets and Mariners are apparently making legit progress on a surprising monster deal:

Previous rumors – would you call them rumors? They felt more like speculation – would have Jay Bruce (and his contract) going to the Mariners, and then the Mariners sending Diaz and Cano (plus $10 million annually, to bring Cano’s AAV down to $14 million) to the Mets. The Mariners would be getting some prospects in the deal, too, but it sure seems like they’d have to be *excellent* prospects for that deal to be fair.

If this goes down, clearly the Mets – and their new front office – want to compete in 2019, which would further indicate that if they trade Noah Syndergaard, as rumored, it’s going to be for big-league-capable pieces. That could make things tricky. And man, the NL East could be very competitive.

Stay tuned.

UPDATE: You’ve gotta have at least one of these if you’re gonna have a big rumor:

UPDATE 2: Mariners trying to make sure there aren’t better offers out there on Diaz? Maybe leaked the Mets deal rumor so they could pressure other bidders?

UPDATE 3: If and when things get serious (again?), the prospects involved in the talks are not the Mets’ tip top guys:

UPDATE 4: Here come the other suitors sliding in:

UPDATE 5: After a day of back and forth and rumors being bounced and shot down, it does now seem like things really are advancing between the Mets and Mariners:
