Enhanced Box Scores

Look. The Marlins are a very bad baseball team that is only nominally trying to win on any given night. But they are still comprised of professionals, playing in their own house, and the statistical odds of even a behemoth taking all three games in a series are not favorable.

Had the Cubs won just two of three, I would have generally said that’s a solid outcome, though I would have been quietly disappointed. Thus, when the Cubs pull off the sweep, you better believe I’m gonna be happy about it.

Cole Hamels was freaking dynamite, allowing the Marlins to do virtually nothing all night, and when a late error led to a tricky 7th (and final) inning for Hamels, he struck out Starlin Castro with the bases loaded for the second out, and then got Miguel Rojas to fly out to right to end the frame. A couple scoreless, walk-less(!) bullpen innings later, and the shutout was complete.

Offensively, the Cubs got another Javy bomb, as well as another clutch pair of hits from Daniel Descalso. Any one of those runs would have been enough, though.

SWEEP! SWEEP! SWEEP!
