Enhanced Box Scores

I have to remind myself that the Cubs have now lost just twice in their last 12 games, so it’s like … OK, this is going to happen sometimes.

Anyway.

What was largely a close and competitive game got away from the Cubs in the latter few innings with some serious sloppiness, though the Cubs were going to have to score more than zero for it to matter. And on that front, the baserunning was not great for the Cubs today, which may have cost them as many as two or three runs.

Jose Quintana pitched much better than his (totally fine) line suggests, but the Cubs’ bats couldn’t do anything against Gio Gonzalez, who picked at the edges of the zone well, keeping hitters off balance. And when the Cubs put a decent ball in play, the Brewers defense made some great plays.

On the whole, the Brewers played a nearly flawless-type game, and the Cubs played with some flaws. The Brewers are too good (gross) for that formula to lead to many competitive games, let alone wins. Thus, the Cubs lose easily.

Oh, and there was this issue …

Full box score.
