Descalo’s Star Foot, Streaks for Baez and Bryant, Rizzo Plays Thrones Spoiler, and Other Bullets

Chicago Cubs News

They are utterly lost without the source material. And I also think they just don’t want to be doing this anymore. Get it over with.

And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you are in many ways fortunate to be divorced from this unholy world:

  • Although Willson Contreras gets the caught stealing, give your love to Daniel Descalso’s foot for making this one happen last night:

  • Brandon Kintzler, whose ERA is down to 1.93 after 1.1 scoreless last night, was out there trying to match Jose Quintana’s reflexes:

  • Javy Baez now has an 11-game hitting streak, his longest since April of last year, which is a career high (Kamka). His streak, and his excellent night at the plate, wasn’t enough to bring him atop the Cubs offensive leaderboard just yet, though:

  • More love for Javy being Javy:

  • Speaking career-topping streaks, Kris Bryant is now up to 22 straight games reaching base, a career-high for him. That streak is also the current high in MLB (Crull).
  • And more love for Kris being Kris:

  • Over the last three weeks, Jason Heyward is hitting just .176/.263/.338 with a frightening 18.9% hard contact rate. No one should pronounce him toast on that basis, just like you couldn’t pronounce him “back” after the first three weeks. But the last three years did happen.
  • More perspective on what the Cubs are doing behind the scenes on domestic violence education and prevention:

  • I have felt for a long time that the Cubs – some in the organization, at least – had very good intentions in keeping Russell and taking this opportunity to try to improve they way they deal with the domestic violence issue proactively, which could improve the situation not only for the Cubs organization but other sports organizations. Then, in turn, the conversation broadens – as it always does when serious issues touch on sports – and maybe there’s some small improvement overall in the way we all talk about the issue. Maybe that has, in fact, happened even as the Cubs have faced (justified) scorn for some of their missteps. I don’t really know for sure. I’m still thinking about things.
  • A great set of Deals of the Day today at Amazon, including grills, charging gear, and pressure cookers.
