White Sox to Become First Team to Extend Netting to Foul Poles

MLB News and Rumors

Well this is one way to steal a little thunder from your crosstown rival when the series starts in their place. And it’s for a good purpose, so I don’t even mind.

MLB has been moving out the protective netting at ballparks bit by bit over the last few years as renewed calls for fan safety have followed a number of injuries. The latest round came after a foul ball off the bat of Albert Almora struck a child in Houston, and the big question has been if and when any teams would simply take the leap and decide on their own to extend netting all the way to the foul poles. If the report is accurate, the White Sox will be the first club to make the forward-thinking, fan-friendly move.

The timeline for the White Sox to implement the netting at Guaranteed Rate Field is not yet set, but it sounds like it could happen as soon as later this year.

Earlier, the Iowa Cubs announced that they would be making this change at their home park.
