Alabama doesn’t have any casinos or even a state lottery. A lottery has been tied to the sports betting market in recent bills but nothing has come of them. House Bill 152 was introduced in the state, it would allow sports wagering, state lottery, and casino-type gaming at physical locations. Alabama’s House Economic Development and Tourism Committee unanimously passed an amended version of the bills to the Alabama House, then awaiting Senate approval. The bill that would have legalized sports betting and casinos in the state has been amended to legalize lottery only. Most recently, that same bill was passed in the House but now goes back to the Senate for further deliberation.

Even though there is no online sports betting in Alabama or mobile betting, the state did legalize Daily Fantasy Sports back in 2019. This gives sports fans a nice alternative to betting sites in Alabama as they hope and wait for sports betting in the state to become a legal option. PrizePicks has a new peer-to-peer fantasy game called PrizePicks Arena, available in Alabama, Tennessee, Wyoming, and West Virginia. Alabama players can enter a lineup to compete against other players in group play to win.

If we see lawmakers legalize Alabama sports betting, a lot of the focus will be on college sports and especially college football. New Alabama bettors will likely be wagering the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers. Alabama has had a dominant football program winning several national titles over the past decade.

There are no professional sports teams in the state and it might have played a role so far in the Alabama legislature not getting a bill off the ground. In other states, professional sports franchises have been major advocates for legal and regulated sports betting in their states. A lack of pro sports in Alabama might hurt gambling interests.
