In the World Series last year, Alcides Escobar led things off with an inside-the-park homer, which was aided by a bounce off of Yoenis Cespedes. The Royals won the game by one run.
Last night, the Royals and Mets met in a rematch of that World Series, and in the first inning, again, a ball bounced off of Yoenis Cespedes, ultimately leading to a run … in a one-run game, won by the Royals. Oof.
Here’s the liner by Mike Moustakas that Cespedes couldn’t corral for reasons unknown:
To be sure, that was a well struck ball. But Cespedes was right there, and it’s hard to figure how the ball found the turf. The Gold Glove winner didn’t have much in the way of answers last night, saying only that the ball “just fell,” and he’s “human” (Mets.com).
Fair enough. To err is human, after all. Mets fans will have to work on the “divine” part.
As for Cespedes, well, at least he picked this ball up immediately and didn’t try to pretend it had disappeared.
