Mascots.
They’re mostly there for the kids, but sometimes they can be mildly entertaining.
But, let’s be honest: sometimes they get on your nerves. Maybe sometimes you want to put a stop to their antics.
Maybe that’s what happened to Addison Russell last night when he let his bat fly into the stands and it nearly took out an angry Diamondbacks mascot, Baxter:
Sure, you could say that was just a coincidence, but maybe Russell just has impeccable aim?
Baxter has the perfect face for an incident like that, by the way, because man did he looked peeved. (Though it occurs to me … shouldn’t he have a friendly face, being a mascot and all?)
In all seriousness, thankfully no one was hurt by the flying bat, which eluded MLB’s new larger protective netting. Russell has had a history of letting the bat fly, and he’s going to have to keep working on that before somebody gets really hurt.
For today, at least, though, all’s well that ends well. And Russell will just have to watch his back and vigilantly scan the horizon for angry bobcats or grey foxes or whatever Baxter is supposed to be.
