Despite the light-hearted style with which you may have grown accustomed here at Baseball Is Fun, I’m actually not a huge fan of cheap and easy jokes. That’s especially true when those jokes come at the expense of someone’s physical appearance. It just feels unnecessarily mean to me. Sometimes I’ll get on about Bartolo Colon’s physique, but I’m also quick to point out that the guy is also a freak of an athlete.
The guy who probably gets it the worst in recent years is Boston Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval. He’s admittedly not the most fit guy, and, at times, it seems like his creeping center has actually impacted his baseball ability. Then, of course, it’s fair game to discuss at length.
Still, though, I don’t like easy jokes. Setting aside mean-spiritedness, it’s just not clever to point at someone who’s overweight and make a quip.
But … today … Sandoval made it very difficult not to say anything:
It becomes difficult to avoid the obvious jokes when Pablo Sandoval's belt literally breaks on a swing. https://t.co/dHagpjhzkX

This actually happened: Pablo Sandoval broke his belt while swinging. #RedSox pic.twitter.com/Sov9Pcyc3z

I … I … just … somewhere in the distance I can hear a single trumpet playing for that belt, who served as best it could for as long as it could. But now it is time to rest, belt.
See? Cheap and easy. Couldn’t help it.
