Baseball players are tough. There’s no question about that. But I’d bet if you asked a casual fan of sports to rank the four major sports leagues of the United States in order of player toughness, baseball would come in last most of the time.

Obviously, that’s not the case, but the problem is that much of the required toughness is not very visible to the casual fan. Before last season, baseball did have some contact, but now that takeout slides and home plate collision are prohibited, players have to find other ways to prove how tough they are.
