In baseball, kerfuffles are inevitable.
Really, anything make the benches clear: a stare that lingers too long, a bat that’s flipped too high, or a hard slide that goes just too far over the bag …
Let me take you back to July 24, 1988, for example:
That’s Will Clark sliding just a wee bit too hard into second base for Jose Oquendo and Ozzie Smith’s taste, leading to a wild all-out brawl. But even after things calmed down – and Smith got some ice on his lip – it wasn’t over.
The next batter was thrown at and ejected, before the benches were cleared once again. Ultimately, the Giants won the game, but as for the battle? That one may have gone to the Cardinals.
