Buster Posey is almost inarguably the best catcher in baseball right now, and probably has been for nearly a decade.
No one – not even Yadier Molina, Russell Martin, or Jonathan Lucroy – comes anywhere close to the 36.1 WAR he’s posted since his first full season in 2010 (and that includes a whole lot of missed time in 2011 due to injury).
Check out the leaderboards for yourself:
Catcher WAR Since 2010
- Buster Posey: 36.1 WAR
- Yadier Molina: 25.5
- Russell Martin: 21.5
- Jonathan Lucroy: 21.5
- Brian McCann: 21.3
On both sides of the ball, Posey is really good. So good, in fact, that he doesn’t even need to wait for the umpire to call strike three.
Check out, apropos of nothing, this hilariously long montage of Posey calling his own strike three(s):
Now that’s a catcher who knows what he wants and goes for it.
