As a Chicago Cubs fan, who just watched his favorite team win their first World Series in over 100 years on the backs of many young players, I have a special affinity towards the value of prospects.
After all, we, the fans, earned that World Series through 4-5 years of last place teams, smart drafting, and aggressive trade deadline selling (not to mention 108 years of consecutive, head-bashing, losing seasons).
And because I’m also not one of those Cubs fans who hates that team on the South Side of town, I was happy to see the White Sox finally beginning their rebuild in earnest over the winter. Indeed, the Sox made a really painful trade last offseason, sending Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox for a package headlined by (admittedly top) prospects.
However, last night, the main prospect in that deal, Yoan Moncada, showed fans what that move was all about: the future of the franchise.
Watch as Yoan Moncada sent the game into extra innings with a one-out, game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning last night, just before walking it all off in the bottom of the 11th against the mighty Astros:
What an absolute stud.
Since August 4, Moncada has gotten a hit in every single game in which he’s appeared, and is slashing .429/.556/.619 with a double, a homer, and 3 RBI. It may have been painful to part with Chris Sale, Sox fans, but trust me, investing in the future is one rewarding way to build your club.
