Although the first base position is not usually know for hosting defensive wizards – it’s usually where you stick that one hitter who can launch it over the fence, but can’t run worth a damn – that’s not a rule. Plenty of first baseman are really excellent defender and have turned their position into a craft.
In the Majors, Anthony Rizzo is one of those guys. Already with two Gold Gloves and one Platinum Glove under his belt (yeah, that’s a thing), Rizzo has really grown into his first base position, with unparalleled defense against the bunt, great picks on throws in the dirt, and, of course, a really good stretch.
But never in his wildest dreams, could Anthony Rizzo pull off a stretch like Haven Williams from Clyde High School. This is a full-on 180-degree splits to make the out and my jaw is hitting the floor:
That was one crazy move. Well done.
