We have seen batters erroneously believe they hit a home run before. You know, doing a little extra something on the way out of the box, only to be surprised when the ball doesn’t clear the fence and they have to start booking it as they approach first base, or head back to the dugout thanks to a great catch.
I have never seen, however, a batter round the bases all the way, celebrating his home run only to realize as he approaches home plate that it was a harmless fly out to left.
Here’s Cardinals prospect Delvin Perez hitting a deep fly ball to left, enjoying his work, starting his trot (ball is caught with ease), and he just keeps on going:
Did you catch his teammates laughing at him in the dugout? I’m sure they were wondering what the heck he was doing, too.
The ball wasn’t even hit THAT deep. I’m not sure if the wind was a factor or something, but it’s not like that was up against the wall. The outfielder caught it with a good five, ten feet to spare.
