Happy 30th Anniversary to Jose Canseco and His Homer-Inducing Head
Jose Canseco’s storied Major League career featured two World Series rings, an AL Rookie of the Year award in 1986, an AL MVP crown two years later, 462 home runs, 1,407 runs batted in, 200 steals, and one unforgettable trip in right field:
Happy 30th anniversary to Canseco, who on this date in 1993 allowed a batted ball to bounce off his head and land over the right field wall for a home run. Despite all the mammoth home run blasts, the flashes of speed, and clutch performances that occured over the course of a 17-year career that spanned 1,887 games, Canseco will always be remembered for this moment.
And while this highlight has played countless times, how many baseball fans know that it was Indians designated hitter Carlos Martinez who hit the opposite field blast off Rangers left-handed starter Kenny Rogers? It was Martinez’s only hit of the game, and it was an important one as Cleveland topped Texas by a 7-6 score.
So here’s to you, Mr. Canseco. We hope you celebrate this momentous occasion to its full extent.
