Patriots Title Odds are Best, Revenge Games, Senior Bowl Stock and Other Bullets

ESPN’s Adam Schefter dug up the following statistical nugget that has relevance as we enter the weekend:

Both the Patriots and Falcons play in games that open the NFL’s divisional playoff round on Saturday. New England hosts a Houston Texans team it beat earlier in the season with its third-string quarterback. Atlanta hosts a Seattle Seahawks squad it hung with on the road before suffering a two-point loss.

Rematch Saturday should be compelling – even if the Patriots are 15-1/2 point favorites against the Texans.

  • Houston’s us-against-the-world mentality is on another level as it goes on the road to play the Patriots. Often, these storylines are overblown, but the 15-1/2 point spread is the largest this weekend and might end up being the largest of the postseason.
  • Let’s see if the NFL sees an up-tick in ratings after they were down across the board on Wild-Card Weekend. Better teams – and hopefully closer competition – will provide reason to watch.
  • The Falcons have revenge on their mind after a close loss to the Seahawks in the regular season. Vaughn McClure of ESPN highlights how Bill Parcells and Joe Gibbs helped shape the vision of second-year head coach Dan Quinn – who used to be the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator.
  • No matter your motivation, good luck stopping Russell Wilson and his 95.9 postseason passer rating – especially if he lives up to this highlight hype video.
  • Over at Pro Football Weekly, Greg Gabriel writes that a Senior Bowl appearance can only hurt the draft stock of Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. We recently looked at Watson as a potential fit for the Bears, who have the third pick in April’s NFL Draft.

  • Have you seen the Super Bowl emoji?
  • I’m looking forward to Alshon Jefferey’s #SB52 tweet, aren’t you?
  • Speaking of Super Bowl, FOX will reportedly have virtual point-of-view replays during its broadcast. The networks seem to bring out something new every year for the Super Bowl, so I’m interested to see how this plays out.
