East-West Shrine Game Players to Watch, Hicks Real Reaction, More Long, NFL’s Most Improved, and Other Bullets

Even though the Chicago Bears won’t have anyone coaching in the East-West Shrine Game, they will have their eyes on the players who are auditioning for future NFL jobs.

Pro Football Focus has a list of 10 players to keep an eye on in Saturday’s game.

Among them are players who play positions of need for the Bears such as Cincinnati quarterback Gunner Kiel, Northwestern wide receiver Austin Carr and defensive backs Treston DeCloud (Oregon State), Tedric Thompson (Colorado) and Channing Stribling (Michigan). The group also includes a tight end, linebacker, edge rusher, guard and a second wide receiver.

The Bears ended up with two players – safety Deon Bush, cornerback Cre’Von LeBlanc – who participated in last year’s game as teammates for the East team. So, it’s not as if they aren’t familiar with using these postseason college exhibitions to find talent worth adding to their rebuild project.

The game is today at 2pm CT, and you can watch on the NFL Network.

  • Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago writes the Bears would be smart to draft Jonathan Allen at three. With this representing the third straight year the Bears are picking in the top-10, Dickerson writes the Bears can’t afford to use their draft spot on a project, and that whomever they draft should be a starter from Day 1. And Allen certainly projects to be that kind of player.
  • Kyle Long is making the media rounds. After recently speaking with 670 The Score, the outspoken Bears lineman talked with UPROXX Sports about – among other things – rehab-related frustrations, the defensive player who presents the biggest challenge to him, playing video games (for charity) and Twitter.
  • After successful rookie seasons, Jordan Howard, Leonard Floyd and Cody Whitehair, will have to go through another learning process in 2017 with new position coaches. Over at Comcast Sports Net Chicago, Chris Boden writes about another learning curve these rookies will face as second-year players. While Curtis Modkins (running backs) and Jeremiah Washburn (offensive line) will get their hands on Howard and Whitehair, respectively, this coming season, the Bears have yet to hire the coach who will shape Floyd’s future as the team hasn’t announced a replacement for departed outside linebackers coach Clint Hurtt.
  • Remember Steve Walsh? He had a workmanlike career mostly as a backup quarterback for the Saints, Cowboys, Buccaneers, Colts, Rams and Bears from 1989 to 1999. But for Walsh, 1994 stands out, because he went 8-3 as a starter to help lead the Bears to the playoffs. Walsh recently reflected on the playoff season, the Bears current quarterback situation, how the Bears handled Jay Cutler and more detailed in this piece from the Chicago Tribune. Walsh has a unique perspective, considering his past and path to NFL success.

  • The aforementioned Clint Hurtt and the Bears went their separate ways after the 2016 season ended, thus wrapping up a stint with the Bears in which he served as an assistant coach working with defensive linemen and outside linebackers. Hurtt appears to have found a landing spot, coaching the Seattle Seahawks defensive line. At some point this offseason, Hurtt was expected to join Todd Bowles and the New York Jets coaching staff as an outside linebackers coach – but that is no longer the case.
  • Akiem Hicks, who had a strong first season with the Bears (even if the team rated poorly in PFF’s front seven rankings) had the realest reaction to the news that the Bears reportedly blocked the 49ers from bringing back Vic Fangio:
  • Not to be out-done by Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery’s Super Bowl prediction, Chargers offensive lineman DJ Fluker goes out on a ledge and predicts a postseason berth for Los Angeles’ new football team. If you thought the Bears’ road to Jeffery’s Super Bowl prediction was rough, the Chargers’ road will have to go through a division that featured three teams with winning records in 2016.
  • Vic Beasley, the Atlanta Falcons linebacker who picked up a league-best 15.5 sacks in his second year in the NFL, was the PWFA’s Most Improved Player. Beasley was selected one pick after the Bears chose Kevin White seventh overall in the 2015 draft. You can look at that how that draft played out here.
