Adams in the First Round, Roethlisberger Won’t Commit to Next Season, and Other Bullets

Good morning, all. Some Bullets for your perusal today …

  • Over at The Athletic, Dan Durkin presents the first in a series in which they will break down who the Bears could pick third overall based on their (many) needs. First up, LSU safety Jamal Adams – who won’t be in any Senior Bowl activities because he was a junior. Durkin has Adams with a top-10 projection because a mix of desirable traits, football ability and intangibles. It’s a detailed read about a player who might be worthy of being the highest safety ever drafted. At least one mock draft previously had the Bears taking Adams with the number three overall pick. It might be hard to pass on a quarterback or one of the top two defensive linemen, but safety is an especially needy spot for the Bears.
  • Is the NFL already regretting the Chargers’ move to Los Angeles? If so, that certainly didn’t take long. Over at Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio writes that the “likely reality” is that the league senses the move up the interstate from San Diego to Los Angeles will be a debacle. Which, honestly, wouldn’t be all that surprising when considering all the facts at hand. For his part, Chargers owner Dean Spanos is not looking back toward San Diego.
  • [adinserter block=”1″]

  • Further, Adam Schefter of ESPN writes the move angered NFL owners and executives. Once source told Schefter the NFL wants the Chargers to move back to San Diego, even though that doesn’t seem like a real possibility.
  • As we inch closer to the Super Bowl, more statistical nuggets will come our way. This one courtesy of Pro Football Reference’s Twitter surprised me. The fact that the New England Patriots allowed the fewest points and the 10th lowest yards per play is something that quarterback Matt Ryan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan should be game-planning to combat.
  • And in case you’re curious, the Patriots will wear their white jerseys at the Super Bowl – they are 2-1 in those uniforms.
  • It’s not as if the Atlanta Falcons defense hasn’t been playing well. In fact, that group has allowed only 19.3 points per game during their current winning streak. That is a stark contrast from the 27.6 points per game allowed in the first 12 games of the season. Not only are the Falcons playing with confidence, it appears the pieces are coming together to peak at the right time.
  • Over at FiveThirtyEight, Neil Paine takes a look at Ryan’s evolution as a postseason quarterback and improvement in his overall game. In short, this is not a fluke.
  • [adinserter block=”2″]

  • Ben Roethlisberger, the quarterback on the losing side of the AFC title game, seemed non-committal when talking about returning for a potential 14th season in the NFL. During his weekly radio hit in Pittsburgh, Big Ben said, “I’m going to take this offseason to evaluate, to consider all options. To consider health, and family and things like that and just kind of take some time away to evaluate next season, if there’s going to be a next season.” It sounds like Roethlisberger, who would play at age 35 next season, is at least considering retirement. Which seems natural after a taking a season full of big hits which ended with a tough loss.
  • Then again, heading into the final week of the season, Roethlisberger was rated by PFF as the 8th best quarterback in the league, so it’s not as if his performance has fallen off in his mid-30s.
  • Speaking of quarterbacks, if you were hopeful that Kirk Cousins would become available in free agency, the Washington Redskins are making it clear that it isn’t going to happen. If it means another franchise tag for Cousins – and a cost of about $24 million – so be it.
  • John Fox tells the Sun-Times that the Bears are not in a hurry to replace outgoing outside linebackers coach Clint Hurtt because defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will have responsibility for the position, as he has the last two years.

  • Bears quarterback Matt Barkley wants you to know he has a life outside of football:
