Senior Bowl Day Two Roundup: Quarterback Watch, Defensive Standouts, Impressive Receivers, More

It should not come as a surprise if (when?) the Chicago Bears draft a name you’ve seen or heard during this week’s Senior Bowl coverage.

Ryan Pace took over as the Bears GM in 2015, and has since drafted six players who have played in one of the last two Senior Bowls.

For example, the Senior Bowl class of 2015 Bears was headlined by safety Adrian Amos and running back Jeremy Langford. A year later, Pace followed up by drafting four Senior Bowl alums, including starting center Cody Whitehair, and contributors such as cornerback Deiondre’ Hall, linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski, and sixth-round pick DeAndre Houston-Carson.

Even though there are several draft prospect showcase games, the Senior Bowl has been the best for a while. Most likely, it’ll continue to churn out the kind of young players who can play right away and possibly provide an impact over the long haul, as well.

With that said, let’s browse through the best of Day Two of practices.

  • NFL Network analysts Mike Mayock and Daniel Jeremiah highlighted two players who impressed on the defensive side of the ball after Day Two of Senior Bowl practices – both of whom are playing on John Fox’s North team roster. Mayock found himself impressed with Temple linebacker Haason Reddick, in particular, who showed comfort as a pass rusher and in coverage during practice. While Jeremiah noted the performance of safety Obi Melifonwu as someone who was “flying across the field.” You can check out their full video breakdown here.
  • Melifonwu earned a mention here as one of the safeties John Fox and the Bears should be watching at the Senior Bowl, while Reddick was part of the highly ranked players who fit what the Bears need.
  • Over on the South side, Arthur Arkush of Pro Football Weekly analyzed the best of Day Two for Hue Jackson’s team, and provides plenty of insight on potential offensive contributors. For one example, tight end Evan Ingram, who displayed soft hands and flashed receiving skills, hasn’t let Alabama’s O.J. Howard overshadow him completely. While on the outside, LSU’s Travin Dural, Eastern Washington’s Cooper Kupp, and East Carolina’s Zay Jones all showed ball skills with highlight-caliber plays at practice.
  • It still sounds as if the quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl could use some work, however. Arkush took a good look at California’s Webb Davis and wrote: “though the velocity is inarguable, his anticipation and accuracy leave a lot to be desired.” On the other hand, Antonio Pipkin, a Gary, Indiana native who starred at Division II Tiffin (Ohio), was most impressive on Day Two.

  • Here is your first look at new Bears offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn at work at the Senior Bowl:
  • Adam Hoge (WGN Radio) considers O.J. Howard to be the star of the Senior Bowl show, which is saying something considering how unimpressive the quarterbacks have been after two days of practice. However, John Mullin of CSN Chicago writes that this might be the draft to add a tight end, even if the Bears don’t get Howard.
  • Todd McShay (ESPN Insider) has a look at how the top prospects fared during Day Two. McShay’s notes indicate Pitt quarterback Nathan Peterman – a Day One standout – put together a second good performance despite windy conditions. He also noted the play of two secondary members in what he calls “a really good cornerback/safety class.” Iowa’s Desmond King (who we noted as a potential two-way threat) worked out in cornerback and safety drills, while Cameron Sutton of Tennessee has been described as the best pure cover-corner at the Senior Bowl. Also in the Senior Bowl secondary, Matt Bowen – a former defensive back from 2000 to 2006 for the Redskins, Packers, Bills and Rams – liked what he saw out of Tre’Davious White from LSU.
