Bears Critical Offseason, Urlacher’s Hair Lawsuit, Free Agents, Super Bowl Ratings, and Other Bullets

If you watched the Super Bowl with a close eye, you’ve likely come to grips with how far away the Chicago Bears are from serious title contention.

If anything, the postseason should serve as a point of inspiration for the Bears and members of the front office.

Over at CBS Chicago, Chris Emma writes that the Bears will embark on an offseason that could make or break the future of the franchise. Perhaps that is a bit hyperbolic, but consider that John Fox has only two years remaining on his contract, and GM Ryan Pace has three. A third subpar year for Fox would put him directly on the hot seat, while an offseason that wastes high draft picks and ample cap room could eventually sink Pace, too. Simply put, the Bears cannot afford to waste an opportunity to add premier talent on two fronts.

For his part, Kyle Long believes:

  • At some point this offseason, a participant in the Super Bowl is going to get overpaid in free agency. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. However, it is funny to read that even the players themselves know it’s coming:
  • Bennett was one of Pro Football Focus’ top 10 potential free agents to watch during Super Bowl LI. He went from a Rob Gronkowski insurance policy to a top-tier tight end by season’s end. The former Bears tight end put it all together in 2016, making him a potentially highly sought after free agent. That is, if the Patriots let him go.
  • Brian Urlacher is seeking more than $200,000 in damages in a lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court against a Florida clinic he claims used his likeness without permission to advertise hair restoration treatments. Urlacher reached a deal with Restore Hair in 2014 and was front-and-center of a 2016 media blitz that featured his new head of hair. The legendary Bears linebacker is among the first-time eligible players who will be up for a Hall of Fame vote for the class of 2018.

  • Tony Romo (who will likely be a top target for any team looking for a quarterback upgrade this offseason) is unlikely to retire. But if he did, reports suggest he would draw interest from television networks as an analyst. Romo still has three years left on his Cowboys contract, which could lead to him being dealt to a new team. It would take an unlikely set of scenarios to unfold, but there were early odds that suggested the Bears were a favorite to land Romo in the offseason.
  • FOX drew 111.3 viewers for Super Bowl 51, which is down from the last two years – but still a healthy showing or the biggest game of the year. Numbers could have been better had FOX not lost an estimated 4 million viewers when the Falcons went up 28-3 in the third quarter. Then again, it’s the 25-point deficit that made the game an all-timer.
  • Newspaper front pages from championship games usually make for great keepsakes, but it all depends on what edition you receive:
  • Mike Vick announced his retirement on Friday, then started his comeback tour on Monday. Inspired by Tom Brady, Vick told TMZ Sports he will stay in football shape in case the right opportunity presents itself. Vick, 36, was an athletic freak when he was at the peak of his powers, but those days are long behind him. Still, with the shortage of quality quarterbacks around the league, why wouldn’t Vick give it one last shot?

  • If it’s never too early to talk about the NFL offseason, then it’s definitely never too early to talk fantasy offseason. PFF has a list of potential moves that could happen at the NFL level that would shake things up on the fantasy front. At the top of the list would be Alshon Jeffery leaving Chicago for Philadelphia. Jeffery joining Carson Wentz would be a boon for the Eagles, a loss for the Bears, and a possible game-changer in fantasy. Sure, it’s early. There are a lot of things that would need to happen between now and then for that kind of move to take place. But know that it’s not inconceivable – on any level. Which is strange, because fantasy and reality usually don’t mix.
