Latest Mock Drafts: So Many Non-Trubisky QBs for Bears, But Also So Much Adams

With the Super Bowl in the rearview, the first round draft order officially set, and the Bears ready to get to the work of the offseason, it’s worth checking in on the latest mock drafts to see how things could be shaking out on that front for the Bears …

  • WGN’s Adam Hoge takes on the fun – but extremely challenging – task of pegging all seven of the Bears’ picks in the April draft. He’s not saying these are the guys the Bears will take, mind you, and is instead just looking to give fans a sense of how things could play out. Further, Hoge isn’t predicting how the Bears evaluate these players – only how he, himself, evaluates them. Among the familiar names you’ll see in the Bears’ picks: LSU safety Jamal Adams with the third overall pick, and then ECU wide receiver Zay Jones in the second round. On Adams, Hoge points out the Bears’ strong, perennial need for an impact safety, even if it’s a less “safe” pick than, for example, Alabama’s Jonathan Allen.

  • Hoge doesn’t have the Bears picking up a quarterback until the 4th round, by the way – Cal’s Davis Webb, who performed well in the Senior Bowl and won MVP honors, but who is unlikely to develop into a franchise quarterback. There’s a lot more in there for Hoge, and it’s worth your time.
  • At Draft Wire, Luke Easterling also takes a crack at a seven-round mock for the Bears, and also lands at Adams for the Bears at number three. Athletic Miami tight end David Njoku winds up the team’s pick in the second round, with the first quarterback coming to the Bears in the third round. It’s Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes, who frequently shows up as the “next best” quarterback in the draft, behind the top three of Mitch Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, and DeShone Kizer. Of Mahomes, Easterling writes, “He’s not the most NFL-ready passer in this draft, but he’s a smart and accurate, with the strongest arm in the class and a quick release. Even if it takes a year or two, Mahomes could end up being a franchise quarterback.”
  • Draft Wire’s broader first post-Super Bowl mock draft (four rounds) actually has Mahomes going all the way up in the first round (pick 25), underscoring not only the possible variance in Mahomes’ upside, but also the delicate balance between how critical the quarterback position is, and how weak this draft’s crop might be.
  • In the Draft Wire mock, the Bears take Adams in the first round, Utah OT Garett Bolles in the second round, Miami QB Brad Kaaya in the third round, Miami CB Corn Elder at the top of the 4th round, and then Toledo TE Michael Roberts in the middle of the fourth. Kaaya’s stock could be on the rise after winning the accuracy competition at the State Farm All-Star Football Challenge. Of course, his performance at the NFL Scouting Combine will mean much more.

  • In its fifth mock installment, SI has the Bears pulling the trigger on Clemson QB Deshaun Watson in the first round, which would make his college coach happy. As the article notes at the top, the defensive talent available in round two and three could be especially robust … so maybe the Bears fall in love with Watson or Trubisky, and then add defensive talent in the middle rounds.
  • Interestingly on that point, one of the latest Bleacher Report mocks have Trubisky and Watson going in the top two slots in the draft, leaving the Bears to poach the top overall talent in Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett. That certainly seems unlikely, but QBs can rise late up the draft boards, and obviously the Browns and 49ers have dire QB needs.
  • Matt Miller’s post-Super Bowl mock has the Bears going QB in the first round … but it’s Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer. The physical gifts are obvious with Kizer, but the uneven play in his time at Notre Dame leaves a lot of risk in taking him at three.
  • Those gifts make the 49ers take that risk at number two overall, though, in Rob DiRe’s mock. As had been the case in so many previous mocks, the Bears wind up taking Allen at three. The Bills take Watson at 10, by the way, and Trubisky falls to the Cardinals at 13.
