Latest Mocks: Mahomes Skyrockets Up, Kizer Falls, Trubisky at the Top, Safety Help, More

Some updates are rolling out as Mock Draft Season continues into February, including some that dive into multiple rounds.

With needs at quarterback, defensive line, safety, and elsewhere, it’s good that the Bears will have a deep pool of talent to choose from when they are officially on the clock.

  • From a Bears perspective, Mel Kiper’s latest Insider mock draft at ESPN isn’t that much different than his first. Kiper still has Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen as the Bears’ pick at No. 3, but adds some context along the way. Because while some are in the “Garoppolo or bust” camp, Kiper isn’t one of them, adding the Bears could take the best available player in the draft, and use the trade or free agent markets to acquire a player like Tony Romo, Mike Glennon, Tyrod Taylor, or someone else who fits their vision of what the team’s next starting quarterback should look like.

  • Speaking of visuals, ESPN teammate Adam Caplan shared Kiper’s latest big board:
  • Pro Football Focus is lapping the field in mock drafts, with the site’s fourth iteration having been released a few days ago. The site’s latest has three quarterbacks coming off the board in the first round – highlighted by North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky going to the Bears with the No. 3 pick. In this PFF draft, Trubisky is the first of three quarterbacks taken in the first round, as the Jets and Texans also select signal callers in Round 1. Author Steve Palazzolo thinks the Bears will like his arm talent, mobility, ability to work through progressions, and third-down efficiency enough to trump his inexperience. The biggest surprise among the quarterback field is the exclusion of DeShone Kizer, who is Mike Mayock’s top-rated quarterback prospect.

  • Charlie Campbell shares his latest at Walter Football, adding this nugget: “There is scuttlebutt that Chicago loves Trubisky.” Acting on this scuttlebutt and the chance to mock a potential franchise quarterback to Chicago, Campbell’s latest has Trubisky going to the Bears with the third pick as the first quarterback off the board. Campbell has defense at the top with Texas A&M edge rusher Myles Garrett and Alabama’s Jonathan Allen going 1-2 to Cleveland and San Francisco, respectively.
  • More love for Trubisky (whom some see as a top-5 lock at this point) as he is also projected to go third to Chicago by Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News, even though he writes Trubisky isn’t the top quarterback prospect in this class. That’s because Sporting News teammate Eric Galko has Pat Mahomes as the top quarterback prospect, adding that Mahomes reminds him of “a less refined version of Matthew Stafford.”
  • While there have been numerous mock drafts drawn up already, Pete Prisco of CBS Sports notes the difficulty in mocking a draft prior to free agency because how teams approach it could change draft day needs and priorities. Even still, Prisco shares his first mock with the Bears selecting Alabama defensive end Jonathan Allen. Prisco describes Allen as a “power player who can also rush the passer” – which, fitting enough, are two areas the Bears’ defense could stand to improve in 2017. Prisco has three quarterbacks being drafted in the top-12. No surprise that Trubisky (San Fracisco, 2nd overall) and Watson (Buffalo, 10th) were the first two off the board, but Pat Mahomes of Texas Tech going 12th to the Browns. Prisco says scouts he has spoken to are coming around to liking Mahomes, but there is a difference between “like” and picking him 12th overall.
  • Staying at CBS Sports, Dane Brugler shared his latest mock on Monday with an update that is different than some of his teammates. In his latest, Brugler has DeShone Kizer as a first-round pick – going to the Bears with the third selection. Brugler has three quarterbacks going in the top-10, with DeShaun Watson dropping to the Bills at 10 as they ride the offseason quarterback carousel.

  • Not to be left out, Dan Kadar’s latest mock at SB Nation has the Bears selecting a different quarterback – Clemson’s DeShaun Watson – with the third overall pick. In this scenario, Watson would be the second quarterback chosen with Trubisky going second overall to San Francisco. While Jonathan Allen is the consensus pick among defensive players projected to be available to the Bears, there seems to be no such consensus among quarterbacks.
  • Sports Illustrated’s latest mock draft installment is a three-round projection with the Bears thinking safety first – literally. Chris Burke has LSU’s Jamal Adams going third overall. With their second and third-round selections, Burke has the Bears filling needs at wide receiver (Washington’s John Ross, 36th) and quarterback (Pitt’s Nathan Peterman, 67th). Burke writes that drafting Adams represents the Bears’ best chance at upgrading at safety without dipping into the free agent waters and signing Eric Berry. Fitting enough, if the Bears drafted Adams, he would replace Berry as the highest-drafted safety. Berry was selected fifth overall in 2010.
