Case for Glennon, Urlacher Hall of Fame Lock, Kush Contract Details, and Other Bullets

It shouldn’t surprise anyone at this point to learn that the Chicago Bears are seeking a trade partner for long-time starting quarterback Jay Cutler. Given his contract – which has almost no guaranteed money left, and has him set to count $16 million against the cap in 2017 – what would be a surprise is if Bears GM Ryan Pace is able to get a late-round draft pick in exchange for Cutler before having to simply cut the cord.

  • As for who replaces Cutler, well, that remains the greatest question for the Bears’ offseason. Over at Pro Football Weekly, Arthur Arkush writes why Mike Glennon isn’t the second coming of Brock Osweiler. And that is good news for the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback. Glennon had more success in his brief stint as a starter than Osweiler, though doesn’t have the kind of upside projection that could net as much guaranteed money as Osweiler received. Even still, Glennon’s smallish track record could provide a glimmer of hope for a team looking to upgrade at the position without selling the farm for Jimmy Garoppolo in a trade or risking a high first-round pick.

  • Maybe a scout looking for the next great Bears defender at the upcoming NFL Combine stumbles across the next Brian Urlacher? OK, that seems like a stretch. Even still, Dan Pompei writes about Urlacher as a virtual lock as a first-ballot Hall of Fame over at The Athletic. Urlacher will be eligible for induction in 2017, and seems like a sure-fire Hall of Fame candidate. He revolutionized the position, changing the baseline expectations of what was expected out of middle linebackers. He had all the skills (size, speed, strength) and intangibles (instincts, play recognition, leadership) in one package. If only he had a quarterback who could lead his teams to sustained success
  • Eric Kush’s contract details reveal a reasonable deal for a player of his experience and projected future with the team:
  • Good deal for a team that can’t afford another round of impact injuries across the offensive line. Kush, 27, was a valuable reserve for the Bears last year.

  • Before he was the Bears’ first-round pick in 2016, Leonard Floyd was a Combine star:
  • Leonard Floyd didn’t have one of the 10 fastest times, but Kevin White – the Bears’ 2015 first-round pick – was included among the top-10 active Bears. You can catch up on the entire list of speedsters who never really found a home in Chicago for one reason or another.
  • In a world where the rumor mill never stops spinning, Martellus Bennett is honest about his situation:

  • Even though the Saints have Drew Brees in tow, don’t count the Saints out of the QB hunt. Head coach Sean Payton says New Orleans can’t be counted out in the search for a quarterback. Drew Brees won’t throw forever, and he will be 38 in 2017.
  • Pro Bowl FB Mike Tolbert was released by the Panthers on Tuesday. Tolbert, a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro, scored 47 rushing or receiving touchdowns in 78 games from 2004-2014. Tolbert was due $1.5 million in 2017.
  • The Detroit Lions have a new assistant coach. George Godsey is the newest assistant on board, joining the team as a defensive assistant, with a specialty in special projects. Godsey previously served on the other side of the ball, highlighted by his time as the Texans offensive coordinator (2015-16),
