Jordan Howard’s QB Preference, a Free Agent Tight End Target, Oakland Stadium Plan, and Other Bullets

The end of the Jay Cutler era will allow some reflection over his time in Chicago.

Over at ESPNW, Sarah Spain writes about the Cutler experience and the journey that ended up resulting in a 51-51 record. Spain also had Bears running back Jordan Howard on her podcast, where he dished on a variety of topics including his dream quarterback (Tom Brady because obviously) and how he would prefer Tony Romo over Jimmy Garoppolo based on experience. (Garoppolo may not even become available when all is said and done.)

Free agency doesn’t begin until March 9, but the Bears’ most productive offensive player already has his eyes on the future.

  • Although quarterback gets the bulk of the focus when folks discuss the Bears’ offensive needs this offseason, the team will also need some reliable – ideally impactful – guys out there to catch the ball, too. If the Bears use free agency to sign a tight end, perhaps Jack Doyle fits the bill?
  • Doyle, 26, trailed only Pro Bowl wide receiver T.Y. Hilton on the Colts in most offensive categories in 2016, collecting 59 receptions, 584 yards, and 32 first-down receptions.

  • The NFL is considering making referees full-time employees, while centralizing replay reviews in New York, which would be similar to the NHL’s review room in Toronto. These were main topics discussed by the league’s competition committee, who see full-time referees as an opportunity to create consistency among crews. It’s nowhere near an imminent move, but talks seem to be progressing in the right direction.
  • Speaking of moving in the right direction, let’s listen to Jordan Howard speak about his NFL Combine experience:
  • An investment group with plans to keep the Raiders in Oakland with a new stadium became the first to formally submit such a proposal to keep the Raiders from leaving town. Fortress Investment Group and city officials hope to present owners a viable option before the two sides meet later in March for a potential vote that would decide whether or not to allow the Raiders to move to Las Vegas, which still needs to find a replacement for Sheldon Adelson, the casino mogul who pulled his investment in January.

  • The New York Jets have added former Pro Bowl defensive tackle La’Roi Glover to head coach Todd Bowles’ coaching staff.  Glover played 13 years with the Saints, Cowboys, Rams, and Raiders from 1996-2008. He made six consecutive Pro Bowls from 2000-2005, and was a first-team All-Pro member in 2000 in a career in which he collected 83.5 career sacks.. Glover joins the Jets as the team’s new assistant defensive line coach after spending the last seven years with the Rams (in both St. Louis and Los Angeles) as the team’s director of player engagement.
  • Tuesday was another busy day of transactions and rumors as teams trimmed their rosters ahead of the start of free agency. The New Orleans Saints are set to release safety Jairus Byrd when free agency begins. Byrd has spent the last three years in New Orleans after signing a deal in 2014 when he was listed as the top available free agent. It wasn’t long before Byrd was named the biggest flop in free agency. Byrd will return to the market seeking a deal for his age 31 season. Remember Byrd’s tale and post-free agency tailspin as the Bears go into free agency.
  • On the transaction wire, the Cleveland Browns have signed punter Britton Colquitt to a four-year deal. Colquitt landed 22 punts inside the 20, while his 45.3 yards per punt was his best showing since 2013.
  • Chris Wesseling of Around the NFL has some potential landing spots for running back Adrian Peterson, whose contract option was not picked up by the Vikings. The Giants, Buccaneers, Raiders, Texans, Patriots, Broncos, and Cowboys (yes, Cowboys because Jerry Jones is always a wild card) are among the teams that could be suitors for the former league MVP. But if Peterson doesn’t like what he sees on the open market, he could always return to Minnesota.

  • Darrelle Revis’ second stint with the Jets is coming to an end, as the team informed him they are releasing him. Revis (who is facing a handful of felony charges stemming from an incident in Pittsburgh) was Pro Football Focus’ 66th graded cornerback, but his 72.1 grade was a career low – and only two seasons remoed from an 87.7 grade that put him among the league’s best. Revis has 29 career interceptions, 25 of which have come while wearing a Jets uniform – but only one in 15 games in 2016.
  • Check out the workout quarterback Geno Smith is going through as he rehabs from an ACL injury. Smith will be a free agent this offseason:
