Mike Glennon has arrived in Chicago, and if you’re looking for a reason to be optimistic about the Chicago Bears’ new quarterback – (beyond “he’s someone new”) – we might have something for you.
Over at the Chicago Tribune, Brad Biggs offers reasons to be open-minded about the Bears’ newest quarterback acquisition. Biggs spoke to multiple current and former coaches to gauge their feelings about Glennon. A former Buccaneers assistant praised Glennon for having a strong, accurate arm, while also being the smart type that attracts other players. Another former assistant described Glennon as “sharp,” “accurate,” and “tough” – adding that he is a “legit NFL starter.”
Biggs quotes one NFL coach who dropped a Matt Ryan comparison with regard Glennon’s skill set. Yes, the same Matt Ryan who won the NFL MVP and was a defensive stop and a better fourth quarter game plan away from winning the Super Bowl. Getting these reactions from former Buccaneers assistants, who have experience with Glennon, is one thing. But for a NFL head coach to proclaim Glennon as worthy of being a starter and compare him to a NFL MVP in the process? That is on another level.
For a flip-side take on Glennon, Chris Wesseling re-visited his pre-free agency piece on why the Bears shouldn’t chase the quarterback they eventually landed to replace Cutler. Prior to free agency, Wesseling insisted the Bears aim higher than Glennon, questioning the logic of replacing Cutler with a quarterback with 18 games worth of starting experience because he couldn’t beat out Josh McCown in 2014 and was relegated to backup duties after Tampa Bay drafted Jameis Winston first overall in 2015. Glennon has a few good game tapes out there, but as Wesseling points out, any quarterback who starts enough games will put out enough good footage. All things considered, this is the kind of signing that doesn’t move the needle – and risks keeping bad teams spinning their wheels in mediocrity (or worse).
In case you missed it, another former Bears quarterback is taking his talents to San Francisco (joining Brian Hoyer) and another cornerback option received a big payday not in Chicago.
Even after a wild start to free agency, the market still has some intriguing names. The Bears and Lions are listed as two teams interested in tight end Jared Cook’s services, though, the Dion Sims signing might preclude Chicago from swiping the Green Bay Packers tight end off the market. The list is littered with players the Bears should be interested in signing, but everything is up in the air after taking some big swings and coming up empty on Day 1.
Kyle Fuller isn’t a free agent, but it looks like he will get another chance to live up to his first-round pedigree in 2017. Adam Hoge of WGN Radio says the Bears plan on keeping Fuller, who is currently healthy and motivated to perform in a contract year. The Bears could use a productive Fuller, who has flashed his talent at times, but has mostly been inconsistent during his Bears career. Injuries derailed Fuller’s 2016 season, but a make-or-break year lies ahead for the former Phil Emery draft pick. (Note, today the Bears reportedly agreed to sign Prince Amukamara, so there won’t be quite as much pressure on Fuller – but maybe there will be extra motivation.)
Washington opened free agency by firing its general manager, Scot McCloughan, in a situation that likely needs to be handled with care. McCloughan is a respected talent evaluator, but was missing in action at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Issues with alcohol have surrounded McCloughan for some time, dating back to his departures from San Francisco (2010) and Seattle (2014). The latest comments came from former tight end Chris Cooley, who spoke on the issue on the team-owned sports radio station saying alcohol-related problems could help explain McCloughan’s absence. The Washington Post writes “McCloughan was incensed by the team’s failure to come to his defense following Cooley’s remarks or to reprimand Cooley.”
Sherrick McManis – who is now the longest-tenured Bears player after Jay Cutler’s release – will present a $25,000 grant with the Chicago Bears to Peoria Public Schools while visiting his alma mater (Richwoods) on Friday. The money will be split evenly between Richwoods, Manual Academy, and Peoria High School. They’ll reportedly use the funds to help cover athletic training services. This is a kind gesture from McManis and the Bears, but also one that could be beneficial in preserving the health of youth football players at a time when it is needed most.
