The fine folks at Pro Football Focus are grading every significant free agent signing on an ongoing basis, which, for the Bears so far, includes last night’s one-year, $4 million deal for wide receiver Kendall Wright (“B”), Friday’s one-year, $7 million deal for cornerback Prince Amukamara (“C”), and, of course, the big Mike Glennon signing.
Glennon received a three-year, $45 million deal, with $18.5 million guaranteed. As we’ve discussed, the limited guarantee and the structure of the contract (almost all of the guaranteed money comes in the first year) makes it a very attractive contract, and PFF agrees, giving the signing a “B.” For starting quarterbacks, the floor in the NFL is just about $15 million annually, and this deal gives the Bears a low-risk, short-term opportunity to see if Glennon can be that guy. The Brock Osweiler deal, this is not.

As for the other graded contracts, you’ll see some familiar faces up top, with Alshon Jeffery’s one-year, $14 million deal netting an “A” for the Eagles. A.J. Bouye’s five-year, $67.5 million deal with the Jaguars ($26 million guaranteed) also gets an “A,” but Stephon Gilmore’s five-year, $65 million deal with the Patriots ($40 million guaranteed) far outpaced PFF’s projected value for Gilmore, and thus the deal is a “C.” Maybe the Bears were onto something by limiting their offer.
