Draft Poll Results, Value of Health in the NFL, A Very Powerful Bears Fan, and Other Bullets

A sincere thank you to everyone who participated in Friday’s Twitter poll at @TheTenYardLine.

As for the results, they don’t come as much of a surprise considering how important the position is and how much fans have clamored to have a true franchise quarterback on their roster. But … a first-round (top three) pick in a draft that still doesn’t have a consensus top quarterback? Seems like a stretch to me. The needs at defensive back and along the defensive line are also quite evident, even if they’re also positions GM Ryan Pace could choose to address after the first round.

In any case, thank you for voting and making your voice heard. And please make sure to follow @TheTenYardLine for more on the Bears – including future polls.

  • Markus Wheaton was one of the bigger names the Bears signed during the primary wave of free agency. The former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver was no stranger to making big plays down the field with Ben Roethlisberger slinging the pig skin, and CBS Chicago’s Chris Emma writes that the Bears believe he can add multiple elements to the offense. If he does, it would be a welcome addition for Mike Glennon, as well as the rest of the Bears’ receivers, of which Wheaton is the second-most experienced member.
  • There likely won’t be many more significant moves made in free agency by the Bears’ front office, but it doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to augment the roster. CSN Chicago’s John Mullin outlines three avenues in which the Bears could travel to improve in 2017. Among those roads is one where the Bears add a Pro Bowl guard, Super Bowl winning middle linebacker, a starting-caliber nose tackle, and a receiver with prospect pedigree. Or, to put it in another way, adding Kyle Long, Danny Trevathan, Eddie Goldman, and Kevin White.
  • Injuries to important Bears starters hindered player development and the chances of the team having a successful season. Further, the injury bug that bit the Bears often also exposed the team’s inferior depth throughout the roster, some of which has been addressed through free agency. Between health, fresh faces in the draft, and an additional depth signing or two, the new-look Bears of 2017 look better than they did at the end of 2016.

  • With Gale Sayers’ battle with dementia going public, expect some of his all-time great teammates to check in. Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times has an additional perspective from Mike Ditka, Gale’s brother Roger, and his wife, Ardie.
  • It’s been a couple of rough days for NFL legends. First Sayers’ news, and now Dwight Clark – known for his role in Joe Montana’s throw that resulted in “The Catch” – announced he is suffering from ALS. And according to Peter King, Clark is the sixth NFL player in the last 10 years to be diagnosed with ALS.
  • Our old friend, Josh McCown, has found a home in New York with the Jets. The former Bears’ quarterback signed a fully guaranteed one-year deal worth $6 million. According to Ian Rapoport, the agreement could be worth up to $13 million if he hits certain incentives. McCown takes over for Ryan Fitzpatrick, who turned in a disappointing 2016 season. Further, his signing takes the Jets out of the running for free agent Jay Cutler.
  • Michael Rogers is a U.S. Navy Admiral who is the Director of the National Security Agency (also known as the NSA) and played a very important part in Monday’s news cycle. When asked a very serious, very important question, the Chicago native made his stance very clear:
