Latest Mocks: Top-5 Shakeup, Secondary Focus For Bears, Unfavorable Allen Comp, More

Hopefully, the Bears’ current regime has a better third draft than Phil Emery, who has just six picks from his three drafts still on Chicago’s active roster. His replacement Ryan Pace is off to a good start, but 2017 could be pivotal for his future.

  • R.J. White’s mock at CBS Sports is an intriguing one as it has the Browns moving to acquire the second overall pick, giving Cleveland the top two picks in the draft. In White’s scenario, the Browns would snatch up two high-priority needs with defensive end Myles Garrett from Texas A&M and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky from North Carolina. The deal would be a blockbuster that sends the 49ers down to the 12th spot in the first round, where they would select defensive end Taco Charlton from Michigan. All things considered, it’s the kind of deal that would send shockwaves throughout the rest of the league.
  • As for the Bears, White lists the team’s top needs as offensive tackle, quarterback, wide receiver, and safety — but sends defensive lineman Jonathan Allen to Chicago with the third overall pick in his mock.  Allen’s familiarity with a 3-4 base and ability to rush from the inside in nickel situations are positives in White’s eyes. Even though the arthritic shoulders are a red flag of sorts, his talent might be too good to pass up with the third pick.
  • SB Nation’s latest mock draft has a major shakeup in the top-5, but there isn’t much impact on the Bears who are still projected to take Jonathan Allen in this mock. However, it comes with an unflattering comparison. Dan Kadar writes that even though Allen looks the part of someone who can play inside and out, there are similarities to 2016 third-round pick Jonathan Bullard — who played only 296 total snaps in 14 games and produced a 42.4 grade at Pro Football Focus.
  • Sticking on defense, a name has re-emerged as a potential draft pick in a Bleacher Report mock. The latest from Timothy Rapp has the Bears selecting Ohio State safety Malik Hooker with the third overall pick. Hooker had postseason surgery that forced him to skip out on the combine. When healthy, he’s proved to be a ballhawk of a safety who can be a game-changer in the secondary.
  • A mini-mock composed by ESPN New York writer Rich Cimini has the Bears landing safety Jamal Adams, even though Cimini writes the team can go in any number of directions with the third overall pick. That would mean the Bears pass on Ohio State cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who Cimini believes is the best man-to-man corner in the draft — despite a concern with regards to hamstring injuries. Addressing the secondary through the draft seems to be a common theme of the most recent round of mock drafts.
  • Jon Ledyard of FanRag Sports Network has a “What I would do” edition of a mock draft, in which he would select Lattimore with the third overall pick if he was making the decisions for the Bears. There wouldn’t be much argument if the Bears went that route, especially if the team received a clean bill of health.
  • DraftWire’s Luke Easterling also has the Bears picking Adams with the third pick, as part of an effort to re-shape the Bears secondary in this three-round mock. Easterling also sends Clemson cornerback Cornea Tankersley to the Bears in the third round. Sandwiched in the middle is another player who fits a need in the second round with Wisconsin tackle Ryan Ramczyk.
