Bears Sign Cornerback B.W. Webb; Becomes Third CB To Sign With Team In Free Agency

Chicago Bears

Depending on your point of view, the Chicago Bears cornerbacks room just became a little more crowded or competitive.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports the Bears have signed cornerback B.W. Webb, who visited earlier in the week. Webb and the Bears’ front office must have liked what they heard from one another because the deal came together rather quickly. Webb also made visits with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns before signing with the Bears.

Webb was a fourth-round draft pick (114th overall) in 2013 by the Dallas Cowboys, but the Bears will mark Webb’s fifth team in five years. The 5-foot-10-inch, 184-pound William & Mary University product has bounced since debuting in Dallas, spending single seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans, and New Orleans Saints. Webb made a career-best seven starts and played in 14 games — his most since playing 15 as a rookie with the Cowboys.

There isn’t much to draw from his career numbers, which feature two interceptions, 14 passes defended, and 59 tackles in 49 career games. Webb played 417 coverage snaps (588 total) with the Saints in 2016, and earned a 65.3 grade from Pro Football Focus that put him as “below average” on the site’s grading scale.

Webb becomes the fourth defensive back signed by GM Ryan Pace this offseason, joining fellow cornerbacks Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper, as well as safety Quintin Demps. That foursome will join returning players such as Cre’von LeBlanc, Bryce Callahan, Tracy Porter, and Kyle Fuller.

The Bears, of course, still could have their eyes on drafting a cornerback. Several of the latest mock drafts have the team choosing Ohio State’s Marshon Lattimore with the third overall pick.
