Ex-Teammate Disses Cutler, Bears Pro Day, Rooney Passes Away, and Other Bullets

Two weeks from today, I fully expect to be diving into whomever the Chicago Bears select with the third overall pick, as well as going through possible second and third-day selections.

But a lot can happen between now and draft day, and there still isn’t a ton of consensus over who that first round person will be.

But setting that aside …

  • Antrel Rolle isn’t surprised that Jay Cutler is on the brink of retirement. The former safety told NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” that Cutler needed to be a better teammate and more involved with the team altogether. Rolle played one season in Chicago, appearing in just seven games in the Bears’ 6-10 season. Statistically speaking, 2015 was one of Cutler’s best years as he posted a 92.3 passer rating and 2.3 percent interception rate. This isn’t Rolle’s first criticism of the Bears since being released by the team in May 2016. In fact, Rolle blamed the team’s facilities for his season-ending knee injury. He then vowed to get revenge on the Bears if the team he signed with for the 2016 season played Chicago. Rolle did not play a single regular season down in 2016.

  • Northern Illinois wide receiver Kenny Golladay was among those who worked out at Thursday’s local pro day. Adam Jahns of the Sun-Times writes about the local product and his journey from the South Side, to North Dakota, to Northern Illinois, and eventually to the NFL. Golladay has the size (6-foot-4, 218 pounds) and speed (reportedly timed in the 4.4 range in the 40-yard dash) that any NFL team looking for help at receiver would covet. And teams like the Patriots, Saints, and Packers have already worked him out, visited, or plan to meet with the NIU star soon.
  • Jahns also profiles another local product in Illinois State offensive lineman Cameron Lee. Lee is a versatile prospect who has developed professional caliber size and strength over the years, and you don’t have to squint to see that the Bears have needs along the offensive line. The obvious necessary upgrades at tackle aside, Chicago could use some more flexibility with players who can play multiple positions. Depth would be a nice thing to add after a season in which Kyle Long, Josh Sitton, and Hroniss Grasu – who were projected to be the team’s trio of starters along the interior of the line – each missed significant time due to injuries.
  • A shakeup in the world of officiating as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Dean Blandino, the Senior Vice President of Officiating, is leaving his post and is expected to make the move to TV.
  • The NFL schedule could soon be on its way. Detroit Lions president Rod Wood hinted as much on Thursday as the team unveiled its new uniforms:

  • NFL.com’s draft do-over series has been interesting and informative, in so far as serving as a reminder that all-too-often draft picks don’t work out for many teams. In the 2015 re-do, the Bears pass on Kevin White to take Washington cornerback Marcus Peters. The playmaking defensive back was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs 11 picks later with the 18th overall selection. The Bears could have also plucked pass rusher Vic Beasley, who went one pick after the team chose White in 2015.
  • Dan Rooney, the chairman of the Steelers, passed away at the age of 84 on Thursday. Rooney, whose father, Art, founded the Steelers, was one of the most influential leaders in NFL history in his own right. A Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee in 2000,  Dan watched his teams win six Super Bowls and eight AFC Championships. His influence went beyond the football field as he was the driving force behind the NFL’s requirement of teams meeting with at least one minority candidate interviewing for a head coach or front office position. The “Rooney Rule” has helped 17 minority head coaches land jobs since its institution in 2003.
  • Hall of Fame linebacker and Bears legend Mike Singletary weighed in:
  • As did Bears chairman George McCaskey and head coach John Fox:
