The Chicago Bears might not use the third overall pick to choose their quarterback of the future, but the team still finds itself on the lookout, and seems to have a growing interest in Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes, as we’ve discussed before.
Mahomes’ agent, Leigh Steinberg, added some more smoke during an interview with Matt Spiegel and Danny Parkins (which you can listen to in its entirety here) on WSCR 670-AM.
Steinberg said the Bears had a “fair degree of interest” in the Texas Tech product, whose stock has skyrocketed since the end of the college football season. Still, Steinberg doesn’t seem convinced the Bears would be committed to picking a quarterback with their third pick. In fact, Steinberg told the WSCR hosts “we’re not expecting it, but it would be great if it happened.”
After taking over for an injured Davis Webb, Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions in 32 career games over three seasons at Texas Tech. He watched his completion percentage increase from his freshman to sophomore season, then again when he made the jump as a junior. His interceptions also took a tumble from his sophomore to junior seasons. Because of the combination of arm strength, athleticism, athletic pedigree, and gaudy numbers posted in college, Mahomes is one of the most intriguing quarterback prospects in this year’s draft.
Mahomes checks in as Pro Football Focus’ third highest-rated quarterback and 29th overall on the site’s final top-200 draft board. After impressive performances at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and at his pro day, Mahomes could be picked inside the top 10 of the first round. You can get a wider scope of the top quarterbacks available in the NFL Draft in our Getting To Know series, where Mahomes ranks as our favorite prospect.
If the Bears are going to land Mahomes, it will probably have to be by way of that third overall pick (not likely), or by trading down (they reportedly want to), or trading up from their second round spot (Mahomes probably does not last until the early second round).
