Glennon took on a whole lot of responsibilities when he signed up to be the Bears starting quarterback, and it’ll be a much different scenario than when he took over the starting role as a rookie in Tampa Bay.
In Chicago, Glennon becomes the face of the offense as the veteran in charge of steering things in the right direction. Glennon will be surrounded by younger skill position players such as running back Jordan Howard, receivers Kevin White and Cameron Meredith, and tight end Dion Sims. And as quarterback, Glennon is responsible for their development – which begins while building bonds and relationships during offseason workouts.
ESPN Chicago’s Jeff Dickerson put together a team of the best players drafted by the Bears, and while Walter Payton and Dick Butkus are given, the rest of the team serves as a reminder of how poor the Bears have drafted in the modern era. Their best quarterback and guard were drafted in the 1930s, their best receiver, linebacker, and safety were picked in the 1950s, and the top tight end was selected in 1961. Center Olin Kreutz was the only draft pick from the 1990s to make the cut, while cornerback Charles “Peanut” Tillman was the only representative from the draft classes of the 2000s.
Perhaps the 2010s will bring a brighter future, especially if the Bears pick a player among the top 14 best NFL Draft prospects as judged by former NFL executive Michael Lombardi. A former executive for the 49ers, Browns, Eagles, Raiders, and Patriots, Lombardi has some keen insight on what the top of a draft board should look like. Lombardi’s list features 14 players who are sure things, can play right away and have productive NFL careers. There is only one quarterback to make this group – which includes five offensive players and nine on the defensive side of the ball.
Former Bears cornerback/return ace Jerry Azumah has an opinion on who he would like the Bears to pick:
The #Bears need an immediate impact player! His name is Jamal Adams of LSU. Draft him at #3!!
For what it’s worth, Adams is sixth on Lombardi’s list. And his best case scenario (player comp) for Adams would be three-time First-Team All-Pro, two-time Pro Bowler, and two-time Super Bowl champion Rodney Harrison. That would play nicely in Chicago.
Gareon Conley, an Ohio State product regarded as one of the best cornerback prospects available in the upcoming NFL Draft, has been accused of sexual assault. It’s a story originally reported by Cleveland 19 news, and one with added intrigue as the news station did not initially reveal the player’s name – despite a statement from his attorney – as a police report had not been filed. Further, the news station was reporting on the delay in the release of the police report in a separate story. TMZ obtained the report on Tuesday afternoon that named Conley, who has since denied allegations.
