Meet Bears Second-Round Pick, Tight End Adam Shaheen

After drafting Mitchell Trubisky to be the team’s quarterback of the future, the Bears traded out of the 36th pick in the second round and acquired some future picks. It was a nice effort to recoup some of what the team lost in draft collateral in the Trubisky deal.

With one of those picks, the Bears added to the team’s group of pass catchers by selecting a large man who is looking to make a successful leap from Division II football to the NFL.

Here is what Pro Football Focus’ Josh Liskiewitz had to say about the Bears’ newest addition:

THE PICK (ROUND 2, PICK 45)

  • Name: Adam Shaheen
  • College: Ashland University (Ohio)
  • Position: Tight End
  • Height, weight, hand size: 6-foot-6, 278 pounds, 9-5/8 inches
  • STATS TO KNOW

  • 2016 stats: 11 games, 57 catches 867 yards, 16 touchdowns
  • 2015 stats: 11 games, 70 catches, 803 yards, 10 touchdowns
  • 2016 Pro Football Focus Scouting Grade: Not available
  • HIGHLIGHTS

    NFL COMBINE RESULTS (POSITION RANK)

  • Bench press: 24 reps (tied-1st)
  • 40-yard dash: 4.79 seconds (11th)
  • Vertical jump: 32.5 inches (10th)
  • Broad jump: 121 inches (7th)
  • 3-cone drill: 7.09 seconds (6th)
  • 20-yard shuttle: 4.38 seconds (7th)
  • 60-yard shuttle: 12.41 seconds (6th)
  • THREE STRENGTHS

  • Size. At 6-foot-6 inches, 278 pounds, Shaheen has a big frame that makes him an ideal target for a quarterback – whether it’s Mitch Trubisky or Mike Glennon – who desperately needs pass catchers.
  • Athleticism. Shaheen was an accomplished high school basketball player who played some at college before settling on football as his go-to sport. He has above average speed and leaping skills that could make him an ideal target for fade passes and go-up-and-get-it plays.
  • Versatility. There is room for growth in Shaheen’s game. He can line up next to a tackle and represent as a dual threat as a pass blocker, or he could line up outside and pose a mismatch as a receiver.
  • THREE WEAKNESSES

  • Shaheen dominated the competition at Div. II, which is good. It would be difficult to justify drafting him if he didn’t dwarf the competition and fill the stat sheet. Even still, the lack of competition means he still has much to prove at the next level.
  • Still raw at the position. Needs to refine route running skills and use his hands and arm length to separate from defenders in the passing game. Because of the talent level he faced on the D-II level, he simply wasn’t asked to do some of the things more advanced tight ends.
  • To be a complete tight end, Shaheen needs to round out his skills in the running game before he’s seen as a reliable blocker and two-way tight end.
  • NFL.COM COMPARISON: Vance McDonald.

    WHERE SHAHEEN FITS

After dealing Martellus Bennett after the 2015 season, the Bears struggled to find consistency and production out of their group of tight ends. The foot injury to Zach Miller was the biggest blow to a group that handed out playing time to Logan Paulsen, Ben Braunecker, Daniel Brown and MyCole Pruitt.

The 2017 tight end rotation offers more than what the 2016 group could in terms of having players with a variety of skills as receivers and blockers. Ideally, Shaheen takes over Miller’s role as the top pass catching tight end target in due time. For now, he might be best used in two tight end sets that allow him to use his athleticism and skills on the outside or even in the slot.
