Full Bears Preseason Schedule, NFL Scout’s Year-Round Journey, Bears Best UDFAs, and Other Bullets

Attention, ladies and gentlemen. Get your pencils and calendars ready, for the Chicago Bears have announced their full preseason schedule with times and dates.

This is what the 2017 preseason looks like for the Bears:

  • Week 1: Thursday, August 10 vs. Broncos, 7:00 p.m. CT
  • Week 2: Saturday, August 19 at Cardinals, 9:00 p.m. CT
  • Week 3: Sunday, August 27 at Titans, 12:00 p.m. CT
  • Week 4: Thursday, August 31 vs. Browns, 7:00 p.m. CT
  • You can check out the Bears’ regular season schedule here as we gear up for the return of football games that have some semblance of relevance.

  • Mining for talent doesn’t end after the NFL Draft. In fact, it doesn’t end ever. Scouting for NFL prospects has become a year-round job, and long-time scout and former Bears scouting director Greg Gabriel details life after the NFL Draft for scouts over at Pro Football Weekly.
  • Over at CBS Chicago, Gabriel turns his scouting eye to the undrafted free agents signed by the Bears and highlights the players most likely to stick with the big team when the regular season gets underway. The undrafted free agent classes are almost as important as the actual draft classes for teams like the Bears, who are currently in talent hoarding mode. Each of the four players on Gabriel’s list are offensive players, headlined by wide receiver Tanner Gentry, kicker Andy Phillips, offensive tackle Dieugot Joseph, and fullback Freddie Stevenson. Three of these four positions are among the biggest positions of need the Bears didn’t account for in this NFL Draft.
  • Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski unearths each team’s best undrafted free agent signing. Once again, Tanner Gentry from Wyoming tops the list for the Bears. Gentry might be the highest profile receiver the Bears added during the draft weekend – and he wasn’t even a draft pick.
  • With that in mind, Matt Eurich of 247 Sports offers up the five best undrafted free agents in Bears history. Perhaps Gentry will make that list sometime down the line.
  • Field Yates has the details of Jaye Howard’s Bears contract:
  • The Kansas City Chiefs waived linebacker Khaseem Greene on Tuesday after the ex-Bear linebacker was indicted on weapons charges in a New Jersey Court. Greene, who was picked by the Bears in the fourth round (117th overall) in 2013, is being charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. Green hasn’t played a game at the NFL level since 2014.
  • The Buffalo Bills fired their general manager and his scouts shortly after the NFL Draft concluded, but have already hired his replacement. Brandon Beane has been named the team’s new GM, which is an interesting hire on multiple layers. Beane was an assistant for the Carolina Panthers for 19 years, most recently as the team’s assistant general manager. His time in Carolina allowed him to be familiar with new Bills coach Sean McDermott – who was the Panthers’ defensive coordinators. Beane was the team’s assistant GM the last two years and worked in previous roles prior to stepping up just below the GM.
  • One officiating note: The NFL has announced a change in leadership at the top, with Alberto Riveron taking over as the league’s head of officiating. Riveron replaces Dean Blandino as the NFL’s Senior Vice President of Officiating and takes the job with an extra sense of credibility after spending a nine-year career as an on-field official.  Blandino left his post earlier in the offseason to take a broadcasting job,
