Bears Mini-Camp Notes: Trubisky’s ‘Tebow’ Package, Injury Updates, Long-Sitton Swap Confirmed, More

The Chicago Bears are off to the races with mandatory mini-camps getting started Tuesday. Let’s discuss.

  • In an attempt to get Tim Tebow’s unique skill set on the field and eventually get him acclimated enough to start some games in the NFL, the Denver Broncos (coached by John Fox at the time) created a sub-package to get Tebow some snaps. Fast forward to 2017, and Fox was asked if such a package would be in the works for quarterback-of-the-future Mitch Trubisky. Over at the Chicago Tribune, Brad Biggs writes as if that’s not something that’s quite in the works. “I’ve been around situations like that before, back in my time at Denver even with Tebow,” said Fox to the assembled media at Halas Hall. “We’re going to do whatever we can. As coaches, we got to put guys in positions where they can utilize their skill set, and it won’t be any different this year.”
  • It’s not a ringing endorsement, but Fox doesn’t dismiss the possibility out of hand entirely. The best-case scenario for Trubisky might be to sit out this year and learn on the sidelines and on practice fields, but getting him snaps in low-pressure spots wouldn’t be the worst idea.
  • While the Bears ponder putting together a package for their prized quarterback prospect, Chris Emma of CBS Chicago writes Mike Glennon (let’s not forget that he’s QB1 on the depth chart and it’s totally his year) is trying to lead while learning Dowell Loggains’ offense. This could turn out to be a recurring theme for an offense that could feature as many as four new starting players. To that end, the more reps that Glennon can get, the more comfortable he will feel in the offense. And as his comfort grows, his confidence will likely follow … and ideally, that will trickle down to the rest of the unit.
  • John Fox is rarely candid with his comments, especially regarding injuries. So it was refreshing to read that he made some of the team’s injury situations clear. Over at the Chicago Sun-Times, Adam Jahns writes that linebacker Danny Trevathan, tight end Zach Miller, and left guard (more on that in a moment) Kyle Long could miss the start of training camp because of lingering effects from season-ending injuries in 2016. Training camp doesn’t start for another six weeks, and preseason games won’t begin for another few weeks after that, so there is still plenty of time for three of the most important Bears to get healthy.
  • In other injury news, Jahns also reports that Marcus Cooper sat out of practice Tuesday with a soft-tissue injury. And Cameron Meredith’s thumb injury was described by Fox as “very fixable” and added he will be back in time for training camp.
  • Speaking of Long, some confirmation from an earlier offseason storyline:
  • It’s worth noting that both players will get reps at both guard spots. Considering both players missed time last year due to injury, it feels as if it would be wise to keep both Long and Sitton fresh and familiar with both positions. Even still, the Bears still have depth on the offensive line with experienced players such as Eric Kush, who returns from last year’s team, as well as the additions of Tom Compton and Taylor Boggs.
