Bears Bullets: Trubisky Credits Manning and Roethlisberger, Best Building Blocks, Improved Vision For 2017, More

Finally, it can be written.

The Chicago Bears will report to training camp later this month.

We’ve still got a bit of a way to go, as things start to get rolling on July 26. But it’s nice to be in the month where somewhat meaningful football will take place.

Onward with Saturday’s Bullets:

  • As we step closer to the start of camp, talk of the team’s building blocks will ramp up as we attempt to piece together what the team’s 53-man roster will look like when the games start to matter in September. Over at Bleacher Report, Gary Davenport offers up what he believes to be each team’s best building block. The Bears have several young players who could fit the bill here, but Davenport chose outside linebacker Leonard Floyd. After a season that was cut short due to injuries, it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities that Floyd can improve on his sack totals from a year ago. Floyd picked up seven sacks in 12 games, and if he improves his pass rushing skills with another full training camp under his belt, he could wind up with a double-digit sack season. Those kinds of pass rush numbers would be a delight to see in 2017.
  • At this time next year, I hope to be writing about quarterback Mitch Trubisky being the team’s top building block going into training camp in 2018. Hopefully a year of seasoning and learning while serving as Mike Glennon’s understudy truly turns out to be his best-case scenario for the 2017 campaign. Further, it would be ideal that some of what he learned from Ben Roethlisberger and Peyton Manning can be applied to his development. ESPN Chicago’s Jeff Dickerson writes that Trubisky credits a pair of Super Bowl winning quarterbacks for giving him some quality advice. While speaking on ESPN 1000’s Kap and Co., Trubisky shares the best anecdotes were shared by Roethlisberger, a player who he shares an agent with. As far as on-the-field action goes, you’re probably not going to find better quarterbacks to lean on than Manning and Roethlisberger.
  • Trubisky showed a bit of confidence yesterday as he shared his belief that the Bears were going to make the playoffs this season. And even though it might come off as cocky, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times believes that the rookie quarterback is saying all the right things this offseason.
  • ESPN recently dug into each team’s roster situation and unearthed veterans on each team whose roster spot could be in jeopardy this summer. Dickerson puts cornerback Kyle Fuller on the bubble as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. The 2016 season was a lost one for Fuller, who missed it entirely as he failed to recover from what was Dickerson called a routine knee scope. Fuller didn’t miss a game in his first two seasons, starting 30 of 32 games. In 2015, he earned a respectable 78.1 grade from Pro Football Focus – a number that suggests better days could be ahead for the former first-round pick who improved upon what was an up-and-down rookie season back in 2014. PFF’s Lorin Cox notes that Fuller finished fourth in yards per coverage snap and fifth in coverage snaps per target in 2015, proving he could be an effective cover corner on a per-snap basis. Hopefully, a healthy Fuller can prove that once again in 2017 and solidify a revamped secondary.
  • It was mentioned earlier when Jordan Howard said he wanted to lead the NFL in rushing, but the Pro Bowl running back had offseason eye surgery. However, I didn’t think about how it could potentially effect his pass catching skills in a positive manner.
