Bears Bullets: Secret Weapons, Toughest Matchups, Butkus Makes A Big Catch, More

I often wake up looking for something good to feel about when I log onto my computer. So, I share this because I feel as if it’s always nice to see players give back to the community, especially its youngest members:

  • One of the focal points of the Bears’ busy offseason was to acquire starting-caliber players who could provide upgrades from what the team fielded during its 3-13 season. Safety Quintin Demps didn’t have as high of an upside as some of the other free agent defensive backs on the market, but he brings a sense of veteran leadership and stability that was lacking in a rather young secondary last season. Over at Bleacher Report, Sean Tomlinson offers up every team’s secret weapon – the player who might be the under-the-radar contributor who lifts the team to another level. For the Bears, Tomlinson sees Demps as that player because of his experience and ability to force turnovers. Demps had six interceptions in 2016, a season in which the entire Bears defense combined to pick off eight passes.
  • Former NFL scout Gary Horton shares his unique perspective on what you need to know about the 2017 Bears before they head into training camp. Horton breaks down the Bears’ offensive and defensive sets, and asks some pertinent things to watch for during camp.
  • Staying in this particular lane, Randy Gurzi of NFL Spin Zone runs down the most important question each team has to answer this summer. For the Bears, it’s whether or not Mike Glennon can keep a firm grasp on his starting quarterback job with Mitch Trubisky waiting in the wings. Even though Glennon has been assured he will be the Bears starter, there is no camp battle that will deserve more attention than what will go down at quarterback. It was going to be interesting either way in the post-Jay Cutler era, but throwing a multi-million dollar free agent who hasn’t started since 2014 and the first quarterback selected in the NFL Draft into the mix raises the intrigue levels to another stratosphere.
  • Over at the Chicago Bears official website, Larry Mayer takes a trip down memory lane and re-visits the time Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus caught a game-winning PAT pass.
  • Part of what makes the Bears’ 2017 schedule so tough is the number of high-end offensive playmakers their opponents will put into formation. That includes Julio Jones and Mike Evans, a pair of receivers they will see in Weeks 1 and 2, respectively:
  • It doesn’t stop there, though, as Vic Fangio’s defense will face 13 of the top 22 highest-graded receivers at Pro Football Focus in 2017, including five of the top six in the first eight weeks. That re-tooled secondary will have its work cut out for it from the get-go.
