Jackson’s Easy Camp, Amukamara Injured, Glennon’s Search for Meredith, and Other Bullets

The Chicago Bears have wrapped up training camp in Bourbonnais with one final workout on Monday:

We had out fair share of good times checking out what the Bears were doing in camp. For a roundup of the weekend’s happenings, you can read some of our observations here and check out some highlights here.

And with that, we’re on to Arizona. But first, today’s Bullets:

  • The Bears really couldn’t finish training camp on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University without an injury, could they? Adam Hoge tweeted Prince Amukamara left Monday’s practice with an injury, but head coach John Fox offered up no specifics on the matter. In any case, it’s unfortunate on many levels. Amukamara is at the top of the cornerback depth chart and is easily the most accomplished player in that group, so they can’t really afford to lose him for any extended period of time. Brad Biggs of the Tribune adds the team should be hoping it’s not an issue that hangs around until September. If Amukamara suffers an injury that keeps him out a while, it would be bad news for that revamped Bears secondary.
  • The transition from being a college star to a rookie in the NFL isn’t easy … unless you’re safety Eddie Jackson. The fourth-round pick from Alabama recently told Zach Zaidman of WSCR/WBBM radio that Nick Saban’s training camps at Alabama were more challenging than what he has experienced in his first pro camp with the Bears. There are a couple of ways to look at this rather boastful statement from Jackson. For starters, it’s apparent that Saban runs a good program (and therefore, a strong camp) because of how many NFL players the school produces annually. More than 60 Crimson Tide standouts have been chosen in the NFL Draft since 2009, so it’s safe to say Saban and his coaching staff are preparing their players for the rigors of pro football. Hopefully, that kind of preparation will have Jackson ready to help a defense that forced a grand total of 11 turnovers last season.
  • Mike Glennon isn’t a rookie, and this isn’t Cam Meredith’s first rodeo. However, Glennon hasn’t completely clicked with last year’s leading receiver, and it was on display again on Sunday. ESPN’s Jeff Dickerson examined the state of the Bears’ quarterback position after Sunday’s practice, noting how Glennon and Meredith weren’t exactly on the same page. Dickerson writes Glennon found Meredith in the corner of the end zone, hitting him in an ideal spot. However, things weren’t as rosy during 7-on-7 drills when miscommunication led to a Prince Amukamara pick-six. Developing chemistry between Glennon and Mereidth is one of the most important story lines in camp as the Bears aim to figure out what they have in Glennon (a quarterback primed to make his first start since 2014) and Meredith (a receiver looking to prove his breakout last year was no fluke) who are a pair of relative unknowns in the grand scheme of things.
  • Off the field, Kyle Long (who was booted from the team’s final training camp practice for fighting) opened up and shared the pain he felt after learning of the events in Charlottesville, Va., which happens to be his hometown.
  • Move on to the next Bullet and don’t read this if you’re a Minnesota Vikings fan. Seriously, stop now. Alright, that’s more than a fair warning. Blair Walsh, who famously misfired on what would have been a game-winning field goal for the Minnesota Vikings against the Seattle Seahawks in a playoff game two seasons ago, nailed all eight of his attempts (two field goals, eight PATs) playing for the Seahawks in the team’s preseason-opening win against the Los Angeles Chargers. Go figure.
  • The Baltimore Ravens added a former San Francisco 49ers quarterback to their mix, but it’s probably not the one you’re most familiar with. Thad Lewis is heading to Baltimore as a camp arm, as the Ravens could use some depth while starter Joe Flacco fights through a back injury. The team had previously showed some interest in bringing in Colin Kaepernick.
  • In other 49ers news, the team is expected to keep Katie Sowers as a full-time assistant coach. Sowers, who is serving as an intern this summer, would become the league’s second full-time female assistant if retained in that capacity.
  • Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins leaning toward starting Jay Cutler in the team’s second preseason game. Cutler was signed after Ryan Tannehill went down with a knee injury that will require surgery and keep him out for the 2017 season. Cutler has been re-learning Adam Gase’s offense and will (in all likelihood) be the starter when the regular season opens up.
  • As for the future of the quarterback position, Pat Forde offers up a list of who he believes are the college football’s most intriguing quarterbacks entering the 2017 season.
