Howie Long Weighs-In on Son, How Cohen Impacts Langford, Impressing Trubisky, and Other Bullets

Now, THIS is how you make a fashion-forward statement on your wedding day…

…while also making Dad proud.

Well done!

  • When Dad offers advice, you listen. And when your dad is a Pro Football Hall of Famer, eight-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro, and Super Bowl champion, you should definitely be all ears. Howie Long spoke on The Rich Eisen Show, saying his son – Bears left guard Kyle Long – needs to “get it under control” after being booted from practice for his involvement in two fights. Long has plenty of reason to be frustrated after a demanding offseason of rehabbing a surgically repaired ankle while also nursing a shoulder injury that hindered him in 2016, but I agree with his father. Despite any issues, the three-time Pro Bowl lineman still projects to be in a place to be the team’s Week 1 starter at left guard, as well as a team leader in the locker room.

  • Kyle Long is one of two players who hold the key to what happens for the Bears in 2017, writes Hub Arkush of Pro Football Weekly. Long and wide receiver Kevin White are the two players who Arkush singles out as potentially being a driving force in determining how this season plays out. There is no doubting Long’s value on an offensive line that grades in the top-five behind the strength of its interior trio. The Bears were already given a tough blow in the depth department with Eric Kush’s season-ending hamstring injury, which makes Long’s recovery and future health all that more important.
  • Meanwhile, White has been a non-factor in his first two seasons in the NFL – and that needs to change if the offense is going to get it in gear. Taken with the seventh pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, White hasn’t spent enough time on the practice field to get a great grasp on the offense, nor has he played enough to utilize his high-grade speed and downfield playmaking ability. He knows Year 3 is important, but will his body hold up long enough to get him through the preseason and into the portion of the schedule where games matter.
  • As was noted yesterday, running back Jeremy Langford returned to practice after an extended absence due to an ankle injury suffered during a training camp walk through. Rookie Tarik Cohen has filled in admirably for Langford while he has been sidelined, and Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times wonders what Cohen’s emergence in the backfield could mean for Langford. A year ago at this time, Langford was the team’s starting running back and the expectations were high as he lined up to be the heir apparent to Matt Forte. But an early season injury coupled with Jordan Howard’s burst into stardom has pushed Langford down the depth chart. His role has been in limbo for months, and missed time due to injuries (remember, he had offseason ankle surgery) isn’t going to help his case. As for Cohen, he has shown flashes of speedy brilliance and the ability to make plays in the passing game out of the backfield – something the 2016 Bears lacked from their running backs.
  • To his credit, Cohen has caught the eye of fellow rookie Mitch Trubisky. CSN Chicago’s JJ Stankevitz writes Trubisky has long been impressed with Cohen and is glad the two can work together now. So what makes Cohen stand out? “You’ve got a bunch of measurables, but it’s all about heart and that’s what he goes out there and plays with,” Trubisky said. “He’s fearless running the ball and he can take it the distance any given snap. …  he’s a great teammate to have and what I love about him is he always practices hard. No one is outworking him. He’s practicing hard and he loves being out here playing this game.”
  • Tanner Gentry’s impressive training camp is going to make it hard for the Bears not to keep him on the season-opening 53-man roster. And that he’s becoming one of Trubisky’s favorite targets can only work in his favor. Chris Emma of CBS Chicago writes Gentry has opened eyes as a go-up-and-get-it guy, which is an aspect the Bears don’t necessarily have with Alshon Jeffery having left in free agency.
  • Jessica Romo of NJ.com reports the gun charge against former Bears linebacker Khaseem Greene has been dropped. Greene, who played his college ball at Rutgers, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm in May – news that led to his release from the Kansas City Chiefs. Prosecutors claimed to have surveillance of Greene handing a gun to someone outside a nightclub, which lined up with the testimony from someone who confessed they were handed the firearm by Greene. However, that person withdrew that story. Greene was taken by the Bears in the fourth round (117th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft, but hasn’t played a professional snap since 2014.
