Mitch Trubisky isn’t hearing your hype. Nope, not him. The first quarterback taken in the 2017 NFL Draft isn’t buying into it. None of it. Not for a moment.
“I don’t know what hype you’re talking about,” Trubisky told reporters at Halas Hall. “I don’t pay attention to it. It’s good to be back at Halas. Finished up camp pretty well. We’ve just got to continue to bring the energy and keep getting better every day like we have so far. We’ve still got a lot of work to do. But it’s good to be back here and getting back at it.”
Alright, guy. You don’t know anything about it – wink, wink – we totally believe you.
If Trubisky is curious where all of the hype is coming from, well … did he see his own stellar performance, where he completed 18 of 25 pass attempts and led the offense on all of its scoring drives? Combine Trubisky’s showing with Mike Glennon’s no-good, very bad outing, as well as Mark Sanchez’s very forgettable brief outing and you don’t have to squint to see where, why or how the hype keeps building.
Indeed, Trubisky played so well he earned a spot on Pro Football Focus’ list of top players, which led to him being mentioned as someone who could debut in the regular season sooner, rather than later. To his credit, Trubisky has deflected praise since his strong debut and said all the right things about being the backup quarterback. But at some point, Trubisky will have the keys to the Bears offense.
Until then, he’ll patiently wait his turn – much like he did at North Carolina.
