Splitting Time Between QBs, Fox’s Odds for Coach of the Year, Ranking Bears Best Players, and Other Bullets

The Chicago Bears took their practices from Halas Hall to high school on Thursday:

Head coach John Fox seemed pleased with the turnout and everything else that happened on Thursday, so that’s neat. It was the team’s last practice before heading out to Arizona to play the Cardinals in the team’s second preseason game.

  • A perfect throw from Mitch Trubisky to Daniel Braverman in the slot was the highlight of what was a good day for Bears quarterbacks during Thursday’s practice at Prospect High School, writes Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times. Each of the Bears’ three top quarterbacks had a good practice, which is an encouraging sign after only Trubisky showed flashes of competence in the preseason debut. Mark Sanchez threw two red zone touchdowns, while Mike Glennon saved his best for the end of practice when he drilled four consecutive passes to Zach Miller, Cameron Meredith, and Kevin White – twice!
  • Much to no one’s surprise, Trubisky is listed as one of the six players to watch in the second week of preseason. Jordan Schultz of Yahoo!’s Shutdown Corner writes Trubisky was the talk of the league after his preseason debut, showing off an accurate arm and impressive mobility. Much like everyone else in the league, we’re on the edge of our seats waiting to see what Trubisky has in store for an encore.
  • WGN Radio’s Adam Hoge has an interesting idea on how to evenly split up the work between Glennon and Trubisky on Saturday, offering up the idea of allowing Glennon to play the whole first half and Trubisky cleaning it up by playing the entire second half. It’s a bit of a bold risk, especially since it leaves Mark Sanchez (listed as the No. 2 quarterback) as the odd man out. However, this is sensible because it prioritizes the development of the two most important quarterbacks on the roster.
  • Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune tweets Mitch Unrein, who is listed as a starting defensive end on the Bears’ depth chart, suffered a concussion in Wednesday’s practice and did not participate in Thursday’s activities in Mount Prospect. If Unrein can’t give it a go on Saturday, Jonathan Bullard and Jaye Howard could be first up to get an extended look.
  • Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune checked in at CSN Chicago to share his list of the five best players currently on the Bears roster. And depending on how you look at it, there are some good things to take away from Wiederer’s list. For starters, three of the five players listed are on the defensive side of the ball. Chicago could use a boost from its defense, especially from free-agent-to-be Akiem Hicks, second-year pass rusher Leonard Floyd, and free agent cornerback Prince Amukamara. On the other hand, if the Bears are going to exceed expectations, whoever is quarterbacking will need to crack this list. The only skill position player on offense to make the cut was running back Jordan Howard.
  • Do you think the Bears have a shot to pull off an upset or two? Then perhaps jumping on the 50-to-1 odds of John Fox winning the NFL’s Coach of the Year award is something you would be interested in.
  • The Sporting News put together a list of the worst starting quarterback in each team’s history. No spoilers, but I think you’ll be surprised that Jay Cutler wasn’t nearly as bad as the player who exemplified the worst quarterbacking in the history of this historic franchise.
  • Speaking of Cutler, his triumphant return to the NFL was officially official with the former Bears quarterback going under center for the Miami Dolphins on Thursday. Cutler played two series and completed 3 of 6 passes for 24 yards in Miami’s 31-7 win against the Baltimore Ravens.
  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback competition is open for business. Blake Bortles has struggled mightily in training camp, and the problems that have plagued him have followed in the preseason. Jacksonville punted in each of its four series with Bortles at the helm last night, and has mustered just one field goal in six total drives. Chad Henne entered the year as the Jaguars No. 2 quarterback
  • Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson has named Brock Osweiler as the starter for Monday’s preseason contest. Osweiler landed in Cleveland after an offseason trade with the Houston Texans that netted the Browns draft picks in exchange for what amounts to be a salary dump. Osweiler gets the call despite DeShone Kizer shining in his preseason debut. Similar to the Bears’ situation with Trubisky, it will be worth watching to see how teams adjust to Kizer now that there is a little bit of game film out there. As a reminder, the Bears and Browns will square off to end the preseason and will play a regular season game late in the year.
