Trubisky’s Best Plays, Bears Tried To Claim Another RB, Patriots Streak Continues, and Other Bullets

I hope to be discussing the first of many Chicago Bears victories at this time next week.

Until then, let’s pass the time by enjoying some Mitch Trubisky highlights:

  • It seems as though GM Ryan Pace is never satisfied with the running back position. Yesterday, the team cut former starter Jeremy Langford and claimed Taquan Mizzell off waivers in a roster move that came as a bit of a surprise. However, that’s not the only running back the Bears reportedly had their eyes on. ESPN’s Field Yates tweets the Bears attempted to claim running back Matt Jones, but had other players ranked higher on their priority list. Jones, who started all seven games he appeared in for Washington last season, ended up with the Colts.
  • With Langford out of the picture, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic provides a clearer look at the Bears’ 2015 draft class  … and it’s not great. Yes, it has yielded two players who will be in starting roles in 2017 (Kevin White, Eddie Goldman) and two players who were in starting roles at some point last year (Hroniss Grasu, Adrian Amos), but the group has also seen two players already cut before the expiration of their rookie deals.
  • Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon offers up his biggest takeaways from each NFL team’s cuts, and calls parting ways with defensive end Jaye Howard the Bears’ biggest mistake. At age 28, Gagnon believes Howard still has something to give in his prime years for a defense that will be young at several key positions. Howard battled a hip injury in camp, and fell behind when second-year players Jonathan Bullard and Roy Robertson-Harris flashed in their extended opportunities.
  • Before we roll into the regular season, note that some Bears have new numbers:
  • A year after parting ways with Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton, the Green Bay Packers have signed his replacement to an extension. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reports Lane Taylor’s new contract is a three-year deal worth $16.5 million. Taylor has successfully made the leap from undrafted free agent to a starter protecting one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. Pro Football Focus graded Taylor as the league’s 46th best guard, giving him a 68.5 grade.
  • The New England Patriots have three undrafted free agent rookies on their season-opening 53-man roster, but that’s nothing new for the Bill Belichick led squad. In fact, the Patriots have had at least one player make the jump from UDFA to the final roster for each of the last 14 years – which is tied for the third-longest such streak in the NFL, according to the Associated Press. This is a credit to the scouting and development of Belichick, his staff, and the front office.
  • If you believe there’s been an increase in NFL trade action this year, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. ESPN’s Mike Sando outlines several theories why the NFL’s trade market has boomed in 2017. There have been 30 trades since August 1, which is more than twice the average over the same period since 2012. Considering the Bears’ continuous roster turnover, it’s surprising GM Ryan Pace didn’t make a deal of his own.
  • Back in June, NFL Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah dropped an Eli Manning comparison on UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen because of the similarities in their playing style. Rosen channeled his inner Manning in Sunday’s win against Texas A&M, throwing for 292 yards and four touchdowns in the fourth quarter (!!!!) to lead a 34-point comeback en route to a 45-44 UCLA victory. If Rosen enters the NFL Draft, he’ll likely be a candidate to be one of the first quarterbacks taken.
  • Former Bears tight end MyCole Pruitt has landed on the Buffalo Bills practice squad after being waived. Offensive lineman Will Poehls was claimed off waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  • This is what it looks like when one of the most popular NFL players doesn’t stick to sports:
