Trubisky’s Promotion, Development Plan, Fox’s Window, Bennett’s Encounter in Vegas, and Other Bullets

Erasing the memories of a 3-13 season was already going to be a tall task, and the NFL schedule-makers didn’t make it any easier:

  • In case you missed it, Mitch Trubisky has been named the Bears’ No. 2 quarterback by head coach John Fox. Trubisky earned the role by quickly picking up what offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains was putting down on offense and executing when given the chance to play. There’s no denying Trubisky’s stellar work in the preseason, where he was the NFL’s most accurate passer and arguably the best rookie quarterback playing this summer.
  • And as Zack Pearson points out over at Scout.com’s Bear Report, Trubisky is one call away from replacing starter Mike Glennon under center. Despite having inexperience (which naturally comes with being a rookie) Trubisky was quite active this preseason, leading Bears quarterbacks in pass attempts, completions, yards, and completion percentage. Finding practice reps might have been difficult at times for the Bears, who carried four quarterbacks throughout the entirety of training camp. However, the team made up for any missed practice reps by getting Trubisky the most game reps of any quarterback on their roster.
  • Credit the Bears for sticking with their plan to ride out the Glennon experience as a starter early, while grooming Trubisky with a conservative game plan that seems to be working. Dan Wiederer and Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune explain the situation that is eventually building toward Trubisky taking over as the unquestioned starter.
  • So what does Glennon have to say about all this? Despite the moving and shaking going on beneath him on the depth chart, Glennon says he still has one main priority – win.
  • With the Bears’ receiving corps being a tattered mess after Cam Meredith’s season-ending ACL injury, the team’s pass catching tight ends will likely play a larger role than originally expected this season. One of the tight ends who could be on the receiving end of passes from Glennon (or even Trubisky) is Daniel Brown, who explained to CSN Chicago’s JJ Stankevitz how he handled being on the bubble and eventually survived cut-down weekend.
  • Brown, who was an undrafted free agent from James Madison in 2015, has made the transition from wide receiver in Baltimore Ravens camp in 2015 to a pass catching option with the Bears in the span of three years. Brown appeared in six games with the 2016 Bears and caught 12 passes for 120 yards with a touchdown in 261 snaps.
  • After back-to-back losing seasons to start the John Fox era in Chicago, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune asks if it’s time to win – or else – for the 2017 Bears. With Fox entering the third year of a four-year pact he signed with the team, it’s a question that won’t go away any time soon because teams generally work to avoid putting a coach in a lame-duck situation in his final year with his contract running out. The Bears could lean on Fox to maintain continuity and push forward its new culture, but at some point winning becomes the most important thing. Only time will tell how that plays out.
  • We’re more than four months removed from the 2017 NFL Draft, and there are still times where I’m surprised (and, frankly, disappointed) that the Bears didn’t draft a wide receiver. There could have been some value picks in the middle rounds:
  • Chris Mortensen reports Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension has been upheld, but the Dallas Cowboys running back can still suit up and play in Week 1 against the New York Giants. If this stands, Elliott’s suspension will begin in Week 2.
  • The Green Bay Packers have signed a second former member of the San Francisco 49ers in an effort to bulk up on the defensive side of the ball, specifically the front seven. Ian Rapoport reports the Packers are adding defensive lineman Quinton Dial to the mix. Dial payed 46 games in four years with San Francisco, 43 of which have came over the last three years and includes 32 starts.
  • Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett has accused police officers in Las Vegas of pointing guns at him and using excessive force during an incident after the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather boxing match last month. Bennett detailed the incident in a Twitter post:
  • TMZ Sports has obtained some video of the altercation, while Colin Kaepernick has already come out standing in solidarity with Bennett calling the incident “disgusting and unjust.” Bennett is one of the many NFL players who have taken a page out of Kaepernick’s playbook with silent protests before games in an attempt to bring awareness and speak out against social injustices. This situation deserves continued monitoring as we move forward.
