Roethlisberger Weighs In On Trubisky, Glennon Slides Down QB Ranks, Tillman’s FBI Try, and Other Bullets

Charles “Peanut” Tillman has always been a little different, but also superb in whatever he’s done.

He wasn’t a traditional shutdown corner in the NFL, but it didn’t stop him from being one of the best at his position. For example, despite not being a ballhawk, Tillman was still a turnover machine, because of the Peanut Punch, a tactic that caused 44 fumbles during his 13-year career. Upon his retirement in 2016, Tillman slid into the broadcast booth and provided quality analysis for the NFL on FOX’s team.

The next move in Tillman’s life, however, is a bit unexpected, as Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that he’s left FOX to pursue a career with the FBI. There isn’t much of a linear move from the NFL to working for the FBI, but Tillman earned his degree in criminal justice from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, so we wouldn’t be surprised if he thrived here too.

  • Super Bowl champion quarterback Ben Roethlisberger – at whom the Bears defense will get an up-close look on Sunday – weighed in on life as a rookie quarterback:
  • If you’ll recall, Roethlisberger worked out with Mitch Trubisky in the offseason and the Bears’ rookie seemed to takeaway some valuable lessons. Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times gets Roethlisberger’s point of view on the session. The five-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champ was impressed with what he saw on tape and noted his athleticism really stood out in person. Roethlisberger’s perspective on life as a rookie shines through here, though, it’s crazy to think about Roethlisberger reflecting on the challenges rookie quarterbacks face and knowing he went 13-0 as a starter for the Steelers in 2004.
  • The secret is out on running back Tarik Cohen, who led Bears running backs in snaps and touches in Week 2. Cohen only picked up 15 touches, but was in on 40 plays, which shows how well the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defended him and possibly gave a blueprint for other teams looking to stop a player who has been the Bears’ most dynamic offensive weapon through two games. Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reviews the Bears’ struggles in the run game, and wonders if the Steelers will take a page from the Bucs book in an attempt to limit Cohen’s damage.
  • No matter if it’s Cohen or Jordan Howard (please be as healthy as you say you are) running the ball, adding a downfield passing threat would help matters in the running game. Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago writes the lack of success in the Bears’ deep passing attack is hurting quarterback Mike Glennon and the Bears’ offense. Glennon has the 10th most passing yards and is on pace for a 4,112-yard season … but is averaging just 6.1 yards per attempt – which ranks 26th among 33 qualifying quarterbacks.
  • Glennon hasn’t taken too many shots down the field in the first place and it makes you wonder if there’s some “what came first, the chicken or the egg” stuff going on. While the Bears are sorely lacking talent at the receiver position, it’s not as if they’re even asking their healthy bodies to run deep routes. Glennon has thrown just two passes that have traveled more than 20 yards in the air this season, which has allowed defensive backs to settle into zones and attack downhill to limit run-after-the-catch potential. An improved running game could help matters, but the simple threat of a few more deep ball attempts could loosen up the back half of the defense.

  • Despite ranking 10th in passing yards, Glennon continues to slide down Doug Farrar’s quarterback rankings at Bleacher Report. Farrar places Glennon 29th in his rankings heading into Week 3 – down three spots from last week. Farrar wonders if head coach John Fox’s defense of Glennon’s mistakes is a tactic to buy some more time for Trubisky to get up to speed or if he truly believes Glennon’s mistakes are fixable. For what it’s worth, Farrar makes it clear that if Fox believes Glennon can lead the Bears offense to sustained scoring drives, it’s a problem because he believes Glennon will continue to make the same mistakes. We’ll see how he fares on Sunday.
